Yes, you can ride up to 125 cc learner legal on a car licence but you will need to do a CBT (Compulsorary basic training) to make it valid (for two years), as it is you can ride a moped (50cc) without doing any training.

Poor Guy, it all depends how old you are.

Regardless of age you have to do your CBT before you can ride any powered two wheeler on the road. That includes 50cc mopeds.

You can ride a 125 at 17, which you obviously are or you wouldn't have a car licence.

Your choices are then as follows:

17 or over? Take your test on a 125 and you are restricted to 33bhp (there's a power to weight figure as well) for the next 2 years. Then you may ride whatever you wish provided you can get insurance. Plenty of good bikes can be restricted to 33bhp if you wish then derestricted, usually free of charge.

If you are 21 or over then you can either take your test on a 125 and have the same restrictions as before or you can do a Direct Access course and test. You must take your test on a bike producing at least 56bhp, but you are then free to ride anything you like without restriction.

If you want to know more, including where to go, drop me a line and I'll be happy to help.

Cheers,

SB

I used to love my old 125 ("tuned" RD125LC). Felt quick as ****, even though it only just managed 100mph (indicated ).

Those were the days, 8 of us on various dodgy 2 stroke's buzzing around North Wales, trying to squeeze the last ounce of power out of an already fragile and abused motor and trying to guess who would end up bringing their bike home in a van this weekend.

When I applied for my provisional licence way back in october 2001, you had to tick a box on the form indicating if you wanted provisional motorbike too. When my brother applied for his a year ago, this had all changed and motorbike provisional was included anyway whether the box was ticked or not. looking at the info on the dvla site, unless your licence shows the motorbike symbol, you can only drive a moped, but presumably after completion of CBT.

I think you need to send off the licence to get provisional entitlement when you have taken the CBT. I may be mistaken, though.

All part of the effort to make it such a pain in the **** to ride bikes that we don't bother. Presto! Instant bike casualty reduction
