Large 'premier' hotel chains: Marriott, De Vere, Hilton, et al.
We have just returned from Mrs D's Bosses wedding, in Sheffield (Rome of the North my ****). The day went spectacularly until the evening reception at the M*****tt.
Why do these large hotel chains insist on providing tiny little bars, generally with one semi-trained member of staff, for these functions, whichin the main are massively over-priced Especially when traditionally they are attended by large numbers of people who are capable of preventing vast quantities of alcohol based products form reaching their sell by dates
Has it never occurred to the bean-counting f**kwits who run these types of places, that if you used a bigger bar, with more, better trained staff, you could charge less exhorbitant prices, and still make bigger profits
BTW, please do not assume that I am singling the M*****tt chain out, as the hotel Mrs D & I used last year was just as culpable, I just can't remember who owned it

Sorry to be a PITA, but isn't Edinburgh Rome of the North?! Cos Rome was built on seven hills and so is Edinburgh!
Apart from that I think you are spot on I prefer family run places -- a lot more homely
