Question Armageddon – any astronomers/astrologers out there?

Look outside into the night sky and you'll see a massive star next to the moon (moonin waxin gibbon cresent or whatever the moon is called at this stage )...

....so what's that all about then? I'm a scorpio what luck does that bring me or are we on for a collision course??

Yes, that's Venus. Incidentally, if you look at it through a scope, the you'll see that it has phases (like the moon).

Saturn is just up and left a bit, and Jupiter is up a bit more and left quite a lot

Well if you look around 9pm tonight you will see....

The moon (roughly west)
Venus very bright just on the right hand side
Mars (fairly faint now) very close to the left hand side
Saturn a bit further left and up a bit
Jupiter a lot further left (almost south) and up a bit more (probably almost the same brightness as Venus).

Note that if you have a decent pair of binoculars, you can just about make out the shape of the rings circling Saturn...

djuk: good effort but you need more zoom on that digi-cam a bit like Iain's The moon and venus looks more impressive from my part of the world

Iain, you really are an astronomer that is a mighty telescope you got there (ooo eeerr Mrs.)...but does one have to build ones own observatory to house one of those?? Hate to think how much one of those costs? Very impressive!!!

Just a hobby

No observatory or anything like that, I just keep it in a cupboard and get it out when there's a nice starry night, (I've even taken it on holiday once or twice to get away from the light pollution around Swindon). Doesn't take too long to set up because it's got a built in GPS receiver, and so it knows roughly where to point itself almost as soon as you turn it on. I can control it from the laptop etc as well. It's a cool piece of kit

Cost about £3000 though.....

Impressive peice of kit

Used your instructions to see Venus and Jupiter the last couple of nights. Probably seen them before, but never knew what I was looking at. Always assume if it's bright, it's a star (or a space station ) Makes me want to get something to look at the stars - light pollution isn't too bad here.

surprising the ppls you meet here on scoobynet. nice pics Iain. i myself am a keen astronomer but like you, Belfast is very light polluted. bought my self a meade lxd 8" schmitt cass last year with GOTO but no GPS. much better than my 12" dobsonian, though some say there is no substitute for apature.
here is a pic of the meade in my garden.

cheers

big sinky

very impressive guys!

here's a picture of mine sitting on my laptop...it hasn't got GPS either but it can just about make out a car number plate on the opposite side of the road Bought them for our trek in Nepal last year and they did the business for about £7.00

lol @ Simon

Very nice piece of kit you have there big sinky. Light pollution is bad here as well. You can see the moon, major planets, and orion nebula ok, but you can forget trying to see anything else. Also, it's hard doing any photography through the scope because of the heat rising off of the houses all around. Have to drive about 20-30 miles before it improves enough to really make a difference.

Kevin, I can recommend it. Even with a fairly inexpensive scope you can see the craters on the moon, rings around saturn, bands around jupiter etc. Basically the more you pay, the better the quality of the optics (so you get higher magnifications, clearer views, and better ligh gathering properties). You'd be surprised at what you can see with a good pair of binoculars though...
