Question Anyone have a moped years ago?

I used to have a FS1E before moving on to a Garelli Tiger which was the dogs at the time .Probably gave me my love of speed thinking about it.

Gov ruined bikes back in the late 70s IIRC by banning 50mph mopeds and replacing them with those silly 30mph max things.

Bikes seemed to die a death after that as the bike test was deemed too costly and long winded when the new laws came into being.

Nice to see bikes are back on the upward trend again now though.

I had the JPS Puch Grand Prix Special, remember the black and gold?

Old boy Lewis would have a chuckle as it had gold mag wheels then in 1977.

It was totally rebuilt by my motocross mechanic at the time and was concours, slightly bored out and fettled. Bloody noisy too with it's Micron pipe if you took out the bung.

It would manage 65mph and allow cracking stoppies.

My mates had a FS1E's and AP50's but had to eat my dust.

Was it the JPS Special as I can't find a picture anywhere?

I can find lots of the Grand Prix but not the Grand Prix Special, black and gold with mag alloys.

I HAD a FS1E as it was a long time ago I guess it is in the past tense.

Happy days though, I guess they were the 1st time as a young spotty 16 year old you were mobile and could go where you wanted.

Also had a bloody noise expansion chamber

When I reached the dizzy age of 17 went for a KH250 and then a X7. Even more smoke and noise.

Went to school on one in the sixties (against rules so had to hide it). Thought I would make it faster by "skimming the head" but I skimmed the piston crown as I thought that was what you did

Honda C50, ahh the good old days. Used to blow it up regularly by bouncing the valves on a couple of downhill stretches, eventully fitted a 70 engine in it, went like stink, especially after I removed the exhaust baffle. Accidentally wheelied it in front of a police biker, he wasn't impressed.

how about a Yamaha DT50M (1981),a great little bike i spent 3 weeks YTS money (£75.00) on a 62cc single ring piston and ally barrel,19mm carb and a Melossi exhaust system.
It went like stink, and i would cruise around the medway towns in my lunch breaks picking off other 50's and the odd GP100 or CG125 that wasn't ready for the drag away from the lights.
The only trouble was the crank couldn't take the extra power and it seized one night spitting me off in front on a load of girls,oh happy, happy days!!!

In 1985 I bought a brand new Yamaha TS50X. Didn't stay standard for long had it ported, hi tech race reeds, S&B air filter, Micron Exhaust etc.

Sold it straight after my 17th Birthday and bought a Chevette.

Strange! No one had a Honda MT50 - the red one with knobbly tyres? I spent hours trying to get an extra mph out of it - mostly by skimminmg mm off the top of the carb slider so as it would 'open up' more!!! This kind of anti-social behaviour would of course mean instant imprisonment nowadays!

Before this (and before being 16) I welded an old lawnmower engine into a pushbike frame - much to the local bobby's amusement and my feeble attempts at law!

Later a Suzuki X7 (Felt SO fast!!! 25bhp was it?);Escort Mk1 1300 Sport;Gpz 600, ZXR750 etc etc

Had a liquid cooled twist n go moped (forget the make) when in France for a couple of years, very quick, no restrictions or helmets needed there Then got an E-plate Kwaka AR50 here, bought the 93cc bore kit and Micron exhaust, 'fast' reed valve, then had the head machined, ported immediately after buying it Went like a bat out of hell on a shovel covered in **** Got 95mph out of it downhill once according to a mate in his car behind, as the speedo only went upto 70 or something

I`ll join the gang then, I had a Honda CB50 then graduated to a Suzuki ER50 `cause I needed a bigger framed bike, I was a big lad at 16.
I live in a back o beyond ghost town, but it seems everyone had a `50` at that time, there was regulary 12/15 or so of us charging round town, laid on the tank desperate for that extra mph.
Great days.

I had a few road going mopeds at 17 years old, (I started my YTS in a motorbike shop so had to get my sweaty mitts on a few bikes.)

I had a purple fizzie, first mod was to take the pedals off, and use the back pegs to try and look a bit cooler.
But pushing it down the road didnt look cool at all.

Then I had a Mallaguti 50 motorcrosser looking effort which sounded excellent, but wasnt as fast as the fizzie.

Next I got a Suzuki GP100 the first bike I crashed (properly), I fitted drop bars to it, and was far to busy looking at the speedo hitting the magical 50mph to notice the cars in front had stopped. My cheesy grin soon turned into a painful whince.

Then I bought "the Daddy of all mopeds" at the time. A Yamaha DT125R with PowerValve wooooo....front and rear disc model, Oh how I thought I was the 'full cheese'.

Crashed that one too.

All my 'mopeds' were never fast enough though. Due to the fact that I was into field bikes at the time(13-17 years old), a few I owned at this time time included:-

A CanAm 400 Qualifier.
A Maico 490.
A Montessa Cota 349.
A Suzuki RM400.
A Gori 250 with a Sachs 7 speed box.

All of which, except for the Montessa, were absolute beasts....

Oh how our local golfcourse suffered, bunker jumping was my speciallity.
I now know it was wrong to chase golfers, if it was you, I appologise.

I had some sort of Puch thing when I was a kid, and it had the pedals as well for any severe uphills.

We just used it to bomb around the bottom fields
