Question What's changed in 18 years?

OK so I am saying a few words at my daughter's 18th next Monday. I am trying to think of what things we take for granted now that weren't around 18 years ago e.g. mobile phones, Westlife, texting, etc etc. Any ideas but keep it fairly clean please Thanks, David

Err.....

This is 1986 we're talking about. Most of the things you mention WERE around.

CDs were introduced to euro markets in 1982.

Internet & email - both around in the 60's & 70's.

Satellite tv was around before 1986.

Mobile phones (analogue) were in use well before 1986.

Although things such as the internet, email and satellite tv were around in 1986 they were not available to the masses and an accepted part of society the way they are today!

How about a stable economy, a non-fascist UK prime minister and police who don't do their job properly (Oh no they were around in 1986 too).

Sorry as the more I think about it the more depressing it gets.

Say things that you mean, like.....

'You can never lend my car.'

'I dislike all you boyfriends, in fact your too young for boyfriends!'

'When are you moving out?'

'Why are you drinking alcho-pops ?'

'Why can you drink more than me ? '

'How is it your sober, and Im bladdered ?'

'No you cant go to Ibiza with your boyfriend.'

Dont say......

'It only feels like the other week, I was changing your nappy.'

Dont tell her you love her in public, they hate that.

When she goes to the bar let her buy you a drink, if you keep throwing the money at her she will hate it. Enjoy it, you will only get one.

Hi David,
I was wondering about what you decided to do for your daughters birthday.
I take it you're having a party and that you gave up on the paris idea!
Hope she has a great time whatever is planned.

Default Go for it!

I think that it's really nice that you want to say a few words at your daughter's party - sometimes girls and dads don't say much to each other (oarticularly at that age!) and believe me, it will mean a lot to her even if she doesn't say so. (Don't leave it 'til its too late, you could regret it, I Know.)

Hi Cath, yeah I couldn't get the Paris thing together or find a venue for theme party. In the end I have taken over the restaurant area of a pub I know and will have a surprise party for her with her gang of pals turning up. Some nice grub and live music with her brother playing Hendrix. Have designed some party t-shirts with a Hello mag front cover transfer with her piccie and other silly pics personal to her. I just wanted something she will remember and I think she will.

PS How's lump??? Can't be long?

thanks Girlscoob - yep we get on well, probably because I'm old and know the score or may be just luck

Well you can give her the ultimate emberrassment or give her the ultimate speech as 18 years ago, you wouldn't have had your daughter, albeit being about 200,000 less in the bank, compunded.

Sounds great David if my Dad had done all that for me I would have loved it.
Even if she doesn't appreciate it now she will when she looks back, but I'm sure she does appreciate it sounds like you've got a great relationship.
Yeah not long for the landing of the lump lol .... 24days to go!!!
Listen out for the screams around the 5th of May if all goes according to dates!
Can't wait to be organising birthdays for my little one

DL.

Just a suggestion, mention what was number one when she came into the world, its bound to be bad.

You can find out here http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/cont/choose.html

where it asks for you email address, just put a fake one in. It doesnt need it and it cuts down on the spam. Hope your speech goes well.

Thanks Cath - all the very best for the 5th (or thereabouts!).

Pistol - yep good idea - it was Cliff Richard, Living Doll - according the link (but I thought it was older than that, must check that out).

David, that could have been the version with The Young Ones ?

I think a speech is a great thing to do, and even if she would be embarrased on the moment, she would think back fondly of it later on

What didn't exist...

Scoobynet
Big Brother (well, it was a different one)
Boys Bands
Spice Girls
Milli Vanilli
Optimax
MTV ? (not sure about that one)
Broque^H^H^H (that existed since ages )
Tamagochis
Koi (well, not many in Europe !), bottom drains, vortexes
Windows (!)
Millenium Dome
Chunnel (not sure again)
Virgin airlines, Easyjet, Ryanair...

You could also concentrate on what doesn't exist anymore (Berlin wall etc)

Have fun.

S'Dude - yes it was the Yound Ones so that explains it

An interesting list and one could say that a pity some of them did get "invented"!

The only embarrassing piccie on display is one will be one when she was an angelic 5 year old with her two front teeth missing (waiting for permanent teeth to come through). I've captioned this My Gap Year

Odd that no one has mention Tuition Fees as that's probably the most significant thing in their lives at the moment. Well that and Jonnie Wilkinson of course

DL.
