Here it is in a nut shell:-
  • Young lass nicks sword (again ) and goes on the rampage
  • Woman warrior fights young lass but hasn't the heart to kill her 'cos she's good at heart
  • Bloke sword fighter fights young lass, says he wants to teach her
  • She says he can teach her if he can take the sword off her in 3 moves
  • He takes it off her (again ) in one move!
  • She refuses to submit to his training so he lobs the sword into a volcanic lake
  • Young lass dives in after it and sucombs to the fumes of the lake
  • Evil old hag swoops in and rescues young lass and sword from lake and takes her back to her cave
  • Bloke warrior arrives in cave to find young lass has been drugged by old hag and takes his sword back (again )
  • Woman warrior arrives and says she followed the old hag back
  • Old hag arrives in cave firing out a cloud of poisonous needles and attacks bloke warrior
  • Bloke warrior deflects needles and shreds old hags sword. Shrapnel from sword tears into old hag. Warrior finishes off old hag and avenges his master
  • Unfortunately one poisoned needle had hit warriors neck
  • Young lass says that old hag told her the antidote and ***** off to try and make it
  • Warrior dies in the mean time but not before declaring love to woman warrior
  • Young lass comes back but it is too late
  • Young lass goes back to mountain to find her love - tells him to make a wish and flings herself off the mountain!
~ The End ~

Where Eagles Dare was on CH5. Now that is a classic film.

Cheers

Yup - I opted for Good Will Hunting too. Where Eagles Dare is coming out on DVD soon, so I'm saving myself for that... don't want to know the script off by heart before then!

I'd read mixed reviews on Couching Tiger, and from the "highlights" I'd already seen, I think I chose wisely in not watching it...

either you like it or you dont comes down to if you understand it or not, most i think miss the point completely. As martial arts is the basis of their culture theyll generally use it in their films but its not about 'martial arts' as we see it, thats where we go wrong. its not about fighting, its about spirituality, the body & soul. im sure the kungfu experts here will tell you, its not supposed to be about attacking but defending.

The film was about honour, courage & love which I think is the general theme of all HK films. The flying is their fantasy folk-lore & myth. If you dont understand the Chinese then try to understand the Japanese culture. Just check out their cartoons!

Having said that, i agree the wire-action was abit dodgy, i knew nothing about the film but went on the basis that it was done by one of the leading hongkong choreographers where the action in these older HK films were much better.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, is an awesome film. As the above says its not about the fighting, its about the story, just that they have some great fighting and wire work included too. But each to their own, some enjoy Steven Seagull and Jackie Chan, others don't, I think CTHD is for those who don't.

Thankfully C4 showed the subtitled version, not the dubbed job.

I too think it is a great film, but much better in the cinema. It's not too everybody's taste though, and previous threads on this board prove this ! But it's a fantasy film, hence all the flying stuff. Some of the fight scenes are terrific though.

Well I like it anyhoo ! Sits on the shelf next to my copy of Tsui Harks 'The Blade'

Speaking abt HK films (although CTHD isn't really a HK film), has anyone seen Infernal Affairs 1?

The thing is, I understand the flying bit (though it did sometimes look silly). The missus asked why they were flying and I said it goes back to myth/ninjas etc etc

I only know cos I used to play Tenchu a lot

Anyways, that aside, the story was pretty weak and full of holes. I knew immediately who nicked the sword, yadda yadda.

Some bits I liked, other I didnt.

i havent looked at any of the makings of, but its supposed to be based on one part of a 5-part novel that was written before WW2. Being from one part perhaps thats why the story was weak, maybe you needed to see all parts. Perhaps reading all 5 books will make it all clear or maybe itll be "its all Chinese to me..."

I watched it to see what all the fuss was about, the fight choreography was superb, but it was outweighed IMO by the terrible wirework, it was SO obvious, & that was the bit that got raved about

glad most people thought the same as me, asked a few lads at work tonite and they all thought it was turd as well

it was just to blatently crap to entice me in, half way through i actualy dusted my room down (not a good sign, the room only gets dusted when im really bored)

then i started doing a bit of tidying, before i forced myself to sit back down and try and "get" this film, as its supposed to be such a "quality" film, i thought i might as well give it a chance, which i binned as i was falling asleep

back to the net i went

This film has the dubious distinction of making my "most ****e films ever" list (see Lost in Translation thread). Suspension of disbelief taken a tad far for my liking.

I'd rather have my eyes eaten out of my skull by dung beetles than watch this crock again.

Small point Jerome, you would have to use cockroaches or similar, dungbeetles are not equipped to consume & digest something solid, like an eyeball
