Check out a Korean movie called The Eye. Don't let the fact that it's Korean put you off, there are some very chilling scenes in this film. You could also try a Japanese film called Dark Water or how about the original (again Japanese) version of Ring? At the risk of being shot down in flames I would also give The Blair Witch Project a go if you haven't seen it.

Most of the films you have mentioned rely more on gore to provide the thrills rather than suspense.

the new dawn of the dead is very good, not scary but a little gory
not so much a horror film, try last house on the left. if you want grossed out try another japanese film called guinea pig, but only the first 2 out of the series.

Try:
American werewolf in london
The Thing (remake with Kurt Russell) - effects are a bit ropey these days though.
Alien
Aliens
The Howling
Dog Soldiers
The Fly
Jaws
The Return Of the Living Dead
Exorcist III (much better IMO)
The Omen

Avoid The Blair Witch Project only a deaf/mute would say it was good (and while watching it, i wished i was!) One of the worlds worst films ever! I rate it in my top 3 worst films of all time.

I watched 'The Ring' (the jap version), I was not impressed. Not scarey at all.

It has already been on tv twice.

I haven't been scared by a film in ages, so I cannot offer an alternative, sorry.

I also think The Ring remake is better than the original.

I think Event Horizon (at least the first hour) is pretty scary. I thought The Hole was pretty good. The Others had its moments. Saw Ghost Ship: not scary, but a decent shock at the start.

How can you say The Exorcist is not horrific (in the non-gory disturbing sense)? Lots of good horror in the 1970s; The Omen is still good; Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the one with Donald Sutherland in). There was a film called the House that Dripped Blood that is probably pants but I remember being terrifying when I was about 12.

not a major horror fan myself, but I agree that Event Horizon and The jap Ring gave me the *******.

Horror films that are too gory don't seem to have the same effect.

I struggle to get chance to watch horror movies, as my wife won't watch them with me!

One I haven't seen mentioned here is 13 ghosts. I have no idea how it ended up in my DVD collection, but I do know that it freaked the crap out of me!

I haven't watched The Ring or Wrong Turn, though they are both on the list.

A half decent one is the one about the tooth fairy (Darkness Falls I think).

Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is disturbing - particularly as it is supposed to be based on a true story.
Mad Man scared the **** out of me when I was about 13. It was made in the early 80s. Kind of a Friday 13th-type movie set in the woods in the dark.

Theres loads of good horror films out there - but not so many in the last few years

I've liked horror films since the age of 4 when I was introduced to them!!! - think Alien was the first one I saw properly on tele......

You may note that my username is the Horror magazine publication...........

Good/excellent films in my opinion

Dog Soldiers - comedy/Horror
Event Horizon - one of my fave films - cross between Hellraiser/Alien, etc
Ninth Gate - Jonny Depp/Roman Polanski
The Fearless Vampire Killers - Roman Planski
Re-animator - excellent at the time it came out, dated now
Evil Dead 2 - excellent stuff
Demons - excellent at the time it came out - dated now
Blade - I like the vampire type movies
The Haunting - original from the 1960's
Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1956?- Darren Mcarthy - not the crappy Sutherland 1977? remake
The Thing remake 1981 - a true masterpiece - based on the short story of 1936
Aliens - a true masterpiece
Halloween - some good bits and the music score
Lots of the John Carpenter movies I like!!!
The Others - good stuff and a great twist/plus visit by the husband in the mists..................
Resident Evil - the game!!! - great music - the film is awful
The Omen - excellent acting by Peck and the music score is a masterpiece
Day of the Dead/Dawn of the Dead - some Tom Savini make up specials
The shining - the scenes, the music, the atmosphere -especially the end
Frankenstein/Dracula the originals with Bela Lugosi/Lon Chaney Jr/etc, etc the movies of the 1930/1940 had some good stuff!!!

Must admit that most of the stuff out now - Cabin Fever, etc is complete crap

Best horror movies for me:-

The thing
The Shining
Dawn of the Dead(original one)- modern remake didn't even come close
Alien
Evil Dead 1 and 2
The Fog
Prince of Darkness
Halloween

Atmosphere is the key to a good horror movie. I'm afraid nowadays Hollywood has to ruin them with corny one liners. Why can't they make them like they used to ffs?

The Exorcist - Watched at the age of 12. Still has an affect on me to this day. I'm more spooked by supernatural type films, gory films don't do much for me

Evil Dead pt 1 - Saw this at the same time, and thought this was pretty good too. If I watched this now though I'd probably laugh a bit more than I did when I was 12!

American Werewolf in London - one of my favs! Not particularly scary, and pretty dated in the effects department, but just a good film! And you see Jenny Agutter naked.

The Shining - Produces a good atmosphere to keep you on the edge. Nicholson is class.

The Thing - Great film. Special affects I think are still quality, and I doubt very little CGI!!!!

The Ring (remake) - Thought this was pretty good! As good (in an Americanised way) as the Japanese Original

Blaire Witch - Don't care what people think, a part from making you feel a bit ill watching the camera work, I thought this was a damn good film considering the lack of gore and actually seeing anything. Something different!

The Burning - A better version of Friday 13th, Haloween from what I can remember. Memory of it is poor though.

Creeping Flesh - great Hammer House film!

Quatermass and the Pit - Seen a long time ago, but it think it was a good oldie.

Invasion of The Bodysnatchers - Seen both, but more of the remake. uSed to give me the *******. Remember the dog with the man's face on it - freaky!

the problem is, it's such a hard genre of film to do well that 99% of them are poor. you have shake your way through a huge amount of chaff before you find the wheat. that having been said, even poor horror films are entertaining, but for all the wrong reasons.

i thought zack snyder's remake of dawn of the dead was electrifyingly good - (the chainsaw scene in the bus was hard to watch) but i'm not having nightmares. you can't beat early john carpenter for quality shocks: halloween (1978), the fog (1981) & the thing (1982) are amongst the best horror flicks ever made IMO. tobe hooper's poltergeist (1982) is another cracker - as is john boorman's deliverance (1974).

couple of good reference sites to keep an eye on: HoH is particularly good.

Have to say early John Carpenter films are the best.
Could be due to the eerie musical scores he became famous for.
He went off the boil very badly with his new stuff like vampyres and escape from LA.
Dire to say the least.

The thing - the best IMHO
Halloween - a cult classic
the fog - classic

although not a JC film, Halloween 3 season of the witch -seven more days to halloween silver shamrock' is quite good i thought.

Ridley scotts Alien should be immortalised as the best sci-fi horror ever made.

What makes a horror film is atmosphere and musical score.

What is happening too much now is selling out to the thick american public who want con-air style corny horror flicks that do not set a disturbing atmosphere in the first place.

Opening sequence of the thing is a classic example of how it should be.

ATMOSPHERE ATMOSPHERE ATMOSPHERE

I do not want to laugh in a horror film!!!!!!

'i thought zack snyder's remake of dawn of the dead was electrifyingly good'

It didn't have the same eerie claustrophobic atmosphere of the original. The zombies weren't even scary and moved more like 100m sprinters. Plus you didn't get the sense of an 'Alamo' style hideout like in the original with the world plunging into anarchy and chaos. It started off well but just got too far fetched and when they cruised out in the armoured buses with 1 million zombies. Where did they all come from? There were hardly any zombies a few hours before when they attempted to rescue that woman across the street??????
Plus the dog that lives and the usual ******* security guards that act like hillbilles. No it was p*ss poor IMHO. Watch the original uncut version and you'll see George Romero should have made it.

this thread is starting to sound like the two dimwits in the video shop from The league of gentlemen" who keep hunting through the videos based on how many killings they have in them

especially one one of them asks the other about "Seven" and the other one says its dead good its about these killings by dopey, sleep, and bashful
