what the best way of selling on a private plate
Long story short.....
i have a private plate (currently) on my car which was automatically transfered to me when i bought the car.
The plate means nothing to me as it was obviously personal to the previous owner, and the previous owner doesnt want it either. I now want to purchase & put my own private plate on my car, so...
Do i have to put the current private plate on retention first to do this, bearing in mind the car has an original registration held at dvla.
Also what is the best way of selling the private plate. Any links would be handy. Ive already had it valued and the return would more or less cover my efforts.
Otherwise, sod it and ill keep it as it is.

three Options here.
1, you buy your new plate and transfer it to the car, the current plate will get takn off and go back to dvla.
b, you transfer the current plate onto a retention certificate (cost £105) and sell the plate at your leisure.
iii) you find someone to buy the plate, transfer it directly to their car (£80) at the same time you put your new plate onto the your car.
booom, robert is your fathers brother

lol
cheers paul
So...
option 1-
from what i understand, if i did this luc's plate will go back on dvla's 'for sale' register and the orignal registration 'S44X XXX' will still be held by dvla, ie if at a later date i transfered or retained 'my' personal plate the original registration would go back on. if yer know what i mean.
and DVLA will also be 'up' on another regisatration - robbin gits
options b and iii - i understand them fully.
Do you know of any companies that would buy a plate ?

Thats right mate, the DVLA will always try to re-assign the original plate to the car.
I would sell the plate if you can, just so the DVLA dont get it back for nothing.
Dont know of any companies that may buy it, instead they tend to sell the plate on your behalf and take most of the prophit!

Chris,
Ello m8. My name is Luc, the previous owner of your car.
That plate of yours cost me £250 all in from DVLA. So i didnt feel it worth spending £105 for retention while i dont have a vehicle to put it on.
But maybe i could change my mind if you really dont want the plate.
Contact me via email please.
