Default Road Tax Reminder

Here goes,

Sold a car last Oct to a mate, I filled in the V5 he was meant to send it off... Anyway just had a reminder for the tax.... I also think he has sold it..

He's not answering his phone, what should I do??!!

a.
Go find find him & get him to send it off/track down the next owner...

b.
Write to the DVLA 'insisting' I sold the vehicle last oct, V5 must have been lost in the system/post (prior to the new law change)...

c.
Something else??

Cheers

Should be a form with the letter on which you can say you sold it

They have been known to try and fine you for not informing them (something like £20 IIRC ) ...just ignore them - you'll get away with it (as they can't proove you haven't done it - i.e V5 got lost in th post).

But you must inform then that you no longer have the vehicle, and the V5 was filled in and give the approximate dates and as much info of the buyer you have.

The lesson learnt here is:- always send off the V5 yourself.

Go with "B" and claim you sent it when you sold it and remember not to make the same mistake again Its a good job its just a reminder and not a stack of parking and speeding related notices. Sometimes mates can be very forgetful

B will be ok,, I bought a repossessed house with 10 or so cars registered to it... wrote to DVLA to have them all removed because i was fed up with speeding tickets, tax reminders etc coming to my address.

They removed them all no questions asked and wrote to me confirming it.

If you get a sorn notice for not declaring it off the road, reply using the form and tell them his address, and tick the box for was dvla notified. I did this on one car i sold and never got any comeback.
