DAB Radios
Evening everyone,
We are thinking of getting my dad a digital DAB radio for his birthday as he likes to listen to the sport on five live / talk sport when hes around the house but have to admit i dont know much about it.
Does anybody have one, are they worth the money over a normal radio?
Cheers
David

Hello
I have one. I actually won it from Virgin Radio.
The quality of the signal is great. I couldn't really get FM properly in the house, but digital has no problem at all.
Worth it? Mmmm. Obviously for what I paid (£0), yes. Not sure I would spend £100 though...
Steve.

Unfortunately there are few 'portable radios' that cover DAB, that can also be considered as "bright shiny objects" in my eyes. Sound quality is great on the machines I've seen but I'm waiting for something nice and shiny and portable (rather than luggable) from Roberts (radio snob, me!)

Dab is the Don , I love mine, its the Hi Fi based version not a portable, you can hook it up to the PC and download any updates, sort of future proof, I'm unsure whether the same can be done with the Evoke?.
If your dad likes his sport he will also get 5Live extra which will give him another Live match on a Saturday, which is always handy.

I bought a portable (Perstel BlueNote) a few weeks ago. The reception was very poor - it was extremely picky about its position and orientation. Even with a good signal, the sound quality was hugely disappointing - most stations transmit 128kb/s or less and the encoding method doesn't sound nearly as good as MP3 bit-for-bit. On headphones it's OK but through a decent hi-fi it sounds naff.
Needless to say the radio went back a couple of weeks later for a full refund. I don't miss it.

It s a crying shame really. DAB had the ability to be really something special.
Then just as affordable DAB units (both HiFi and portables) started becoming available, they started lowering bit rates just so they could fit more channels in.
Its at the point now that on some channels the bit rates are so low that is sounds like a crappy MP3 being streamed over the 'net.
Freeview radio on the other hand is excellent for the major channels, nice big bit rates. Played through a nice HiFi, the sound quality can be amazing.
Anyway, back on subject, yes a DAB portable will be fine for listening to sport on. Just check the coverage first.
Cheers
