when it comes from the isle of man apparently??

Indeed, she's talking bull$hit. IOM money is legal tender over here but most shops don't know that, other than the ones around the ferry ports (Liverpool, Heysham etc.).
If they don't accept it you should be able to walk into any high street bank and change it for english money.
