Question Cat D & C, Vehicle auctions?

Something I'm considering is buying a cat D vehicle, I'm aware of some of the pro's and con's of buying a car on V car, cat C or D.

Getting a car for a lot less than its true value makes sense, I'm not thinking of getting one to make any money so thats not an issue. The ones I have seen are visually no different to a car on a dealers forecourt only a fraction of the price, cosmetically and mechanically they seem too good to be true.
It's a legitimate salvage place that's selling these so Im not worried there.
There also selling dealer part exchange's which again are extremely cheap only these are being sold through internet bidding which go against a physical auction.

Just really a question to see if theres anything else I should be aware of?
How does it affect the insurance?

I no all about the Cat D one's, but what is Cat C?
"Vehicles may be HPI clear or recorded as a category 'D', this will be indicated in the vehicle description. A category ‘D’ stolen and recovered vehicle is one that has been stolen and the claim for loss has been settled by the insurance company prior to it’s recovery. The damage caused to the vehicles advertised in this page is relatively superficial, and is significantly less than the retail value of the car immediately prior to it being stolen. NB:- Some of these vehicles may have had their identity numbers tampered with and have been re-stamped with their correct identity”

Cat. C won't be a stolen recovered for a start (someone correct me if i'm wrong) but will be an accident damaged write off - it will need an MOT before it can go back on the road and they're also not classed as V cars i think - was under the impression V cars were Cat. B write offs

insurance won't be a problem - your insuring the car not it's history

Cool

I drive a Cat C Ford Escort about, I bought it from Car-Transplants in Winsford

Process was quite simple, hunt about until you find a suitable car, in this car M reg Blue Escort with dent in rear door and 1/4 panel decided it was only cosmetic and not structural but due to cost of proper fix including replacing 1/4 car was written off, the window in the door still winds down to show how light the damage is.

Bought it, they ship it to your house as it does not have a V5, keep all the recipts as proof of purchase,

Fix the car as required (big hammer and ponjo and wrong shade of blue )

I then serviced and MOT'd the car, you then need to have a vehicle identity check (VOSA) £26 later this is to make sure you didn't steal a car the same and put your crashed cars I.D on it and pronouced your motor fixed!

You can then use the form to tax the car and send it of to get the V5, which will state the car has been repaired and needed the I.D check

My insurance company who are Highway through Adrian Flux were not bothered about the car being Cat C

I now have a very reliable but tatty M reg car for less than £300 its only tatty cos i cant be bothered to do anything about it

Hope it helps

make sure the vehicle is repaired properly and you have all reciepts etc as a new ruling was made at the end of last year where if you put a crash repaired car on the road dvla will notify the local authority and they will come out and check the vehicle is road worthy etc, and it has been known for a car to be confiscated by the police due to these new checks, i know of one person who lost a vehicle because the car had been reshelled so avoid a reshelling a car and you should be ok

Excellent ,
thats spot on the kind of info I was after, sound's so simple I don't no why Ive never done it before, I think the only cost after getting one cheap enough will be, firstly getting it delivered at £125, then getting the panels, glass, trim.

Was initially only going to get something real cheap, but I've seen a nice golf, an fto and an mr2 all just with panel damage and unrecorded.
Some have still got there V5's so I may go down that route and get one that's unrecorded.

I'm going to try and stay away from one that needs reshelling, as that's a bit beyond my capabilites.

A few bargains here I'm tempted by

if your buying an impreza dont get one with the air bags out as its a dealer only repair, they will only put the airbags in UK cars and its 1900 pounds for the new bags installed
