Couldn't get into the house today - bursting for a p!ss so I crept around the the side of the garage - stepped on a slimey, bird keek covered plank and hay presto a rustly nail went through my shoe and struck bone. Rang mammy to see what to do and it turns out I haven't had a tetanus jab since I was 10, 17 years ago!

Anyone need a booster?

Last time was about 5 years ago when I "fell" head first through two glass doors... don't ask!

I was at pains to point out to the doctor (in my slightly tipsy state) that vaccination was closing the stable door after the horse had bolted. Had the tetanus bacteria been present, or indeed taken hold, only antibiotics and antitoxin would have saved me a locked jaw, but he insisted on giving me a booster nonetheless. What do quacks know!

Tetanus booster lasts 10 yrs. If you've had a total of six in your lifetime, then immunity is lifelong.
Giving a booster at the time of a potentially contaminated wound DOES protect you as it stimulates a very quick immune response, before any tetanus bacilli have time to do their dastardly deed.

And actually, 'Quacks' do know quite a lot !!

We also get paid for every tetanus booster given....

I stand corrected.... you DO know something.... how to make a fast buck!

Seriously though.... how does the vaccine create a faster immune reaction than the microbe itself? Why not just treat for the bacterial infection and the byproducts it produces?

Bloody great rusty nail though my foot around 8 years ago, the jab hurt more then the nail, needless to say i've worn steel toecaps/ midsoles ever since, at work that is.

ajm...

It's to do with 'antigen load'... lots of antigen in the jab, which is what stimulates antibodies.. not very much in the bacteria itself until has multiplied +++, which takes time.
More effective than antibiotics etc.

Sniff sniff.... is that Bullsh1t I can smell??

Thumbs up

When i had a pi55ed up row with an ex bird I was with at the time 5 years ago.. Put my arm through a window, 32 stitches later & 3 Lovely Scars on my arm.. Had to have a booster then, even offered to drop my pants for the sexy nurse who gave it, thought they gave it in the bum cheek??
