I suppose for £100 you can't expect too much. I didn't have many problems with mine. Had to have new C.V. joints, a new steering rack, and the carburettor was a bit dodgy. Other than that it was just the usual consumable stuff. It did start to rust along the bottom of the windscreen so you could look under the rubber seal on it to check that.
I'm no mechanic though, that's for sure, so I expect there's better advice to be had from someone else here!

Thanks for the advise!! As you say, for £100 what should I expect!! Lets see what a heap it is on Monday Hopefully I will get myself a little bargin. Was going to spend up to £1000 on a car anyway so may just get it all done up as well and still save money

The combination of a £100 price and 2 months MOT suggests that the seller knows that some major work is going to be needed 2 months from now. As a cheap runaround for 2 months, it sounds fine; as a longer term car for your mum, it could be expensive.
Completely agree with comments about Golf reliability/longevity. A friend ran a GTi to over 200K miles with no breakdowns. MOTs always required a bit of expense.
