CAn't see a firework hitting the crowd from the castle.

Hello
A foreign friend of mine travelled from London to Edinburgh for the New Year celebrations. She wasn't impressed they were cancelled.
I was a little surprised: It's SCOTLAND in the middle of winter, shouldn't it be cancelled every year if weather were a contributing factor?
Steve.

I worked with the firework guys one year and they are very very safety concious. You also have to remember that whilst folk are down in princes street and it is windy the csatle which is far far more exposed is very very windy.
I spoke to one of the sound techs on the phone last night and he was sayig that the stage had disintegrated and part of the princes street garden tent had gone missing,
The firework guys ran one test rocket that rather than going straight up in the air (or indeed an a small angle) it went up 20ft then got blown sideways onto the castle wall. It was at that point they took the decision not to run with the castle display.
Again you have to remember that the fireworks are let off in very close proximity to the castle so much so that every year windows get broken just from the sound levels of these things going off.

Pete Irvine, director of Unique Events, which co-ordinated the four-day Hogmanay programme, said the decision to cancel had been "very, very tough," and defended its timing.
"We cancelled each thing in progression and we didn't even cancel the fireworks until the very last minute," he said.
"We all wanted this to go on and we had to balance our consideration for those many people from across the world who had travelled to Edinburgh with our equally important responsibility to ensure the safety of everyone at the event."
Rainfall earlier in the day gave way to increasingly strong winds, blustering up to 48mph, causing structural damage and injury to at least four event stewards.
Sounds fair to me, a real shame for those hoping to watch though

My sister live in Edinburgh.
The weather was foul from about 8 pm till 9.30 but after that it was ok.
I smell bullsh1t in the official line.
Defintely a security threat - weather excuse used to prevent mass panic.

The weather in Scotland isn't always cr@p; that's just the usual lame impression from those who don't live here.
The weather over the past few months has been very mild. I've been wearing T-Shirts all year and it's only recently I started wearing fleeces as the temps have dropped. We've had no real snow in the Central belt and until last night the worst was some rain (not uncommon for here). Last night it was very windy - enough to knock out our Sat signal (first time in well over a year).
People are far too paranoid. We spent the last 30 yrs under terrorist threats from the IRA. Now when the slightest thing goes wrong or gets cancelled people start shouting about Islamic Fundametalists
Celebrations were cancelled all over the country due to the weather and I don't understand all the paranoia in this country right now.

Weather in Glasgow was MENTAL all day yesterday.
Widespread flooding and high winds.
Wouldn't fancy being outside and drinking (hic) in those conditions, never mind a rocket in the face!!!
