After reading other threads on here re. Jessops (Jessups??) and deciding on a Canon Powershot A70 I did some research on prices and found Amazon the best. (c. £210). Went into Jessops and they price matched so no need to wait for delivery .....
Personally I'd do the research into the camera you want (or a couple of possibles) then get on the web and go walkabout in town and see what you can get.
Oh, PCWORLD are doing the Minolta Diamge Z1 (10x optical zoom) for about £240 but only on their web site ... I know PCWorld suck but if that's the camera you're after then it's a no-brainer (until the 31st)

g/f has a Canon A60 which has 2M pixels. I know it's hardly leading edge but it produces nice shots, in fact really nice shots, and does nearly everything you require. All this for £130 on Amazon, and probably elsewhere as well.
It is a bit hard on batteries but uses AAs so you can get rechargables if you want.
Certainly worth looking at.

Dixons are doing a Casio qv r40,128mb card and case for £220. Its 4 mega pixels,3x optical,3x digital zoom.Only draw back is there is no sound on video mode, but for the money it's an excellent idiot proof camera which takes an above average photo.
p.s forgot to mention it also comes with batteries and charger.

I can vouch for the Casio QV-R40 as well, £169 without the card, you can then get a 256MB for about £45 fom ebay.
Very compact metal body, excellent battery life and great picture quality.
Lens does show some barrel distortion at wide angle, but then so do a lot of compact cameras.
