Question

Hi All

My speedo is playing up on my car since the garage fitted a new clutch and they don't know why I am now driving around in my car with no speedo most of the time

Is this illegal? I have no idea what speed I am doing so I am no doubt breaking the speed limit. I am very unhappy about this but the garage don't seem interested in fixing the fault even though they caused it

Thanks

Paul

I'm pretty sure it's illegal under C&U regs however it doesn't appear to be covered by the MOT. My Clio has been without a speedo for about 18 months now (although the odometer works fine)

If you get caught speeding and use lack of speedo as your excuse, it won't wash and you'll likely get prosecuted for driving without a speedo as well, you hardened criminal

I had to drive around in my *ahem*XR2*ahem* years ago with no speedo. The little nylon cog that drove the cable snapped inside the gearbox and the only way to sort it was a new gearbox Luckily it blew up soon after

If you have a rev counter you can work out what speed you are doing (if you know the gear ratio's of course, at least for, say, 3rd/4th gear)

If the drive to your speedo is a cable or a electrical sensor & comes off the gear box then it would have been disconnected when they did the clutch.

When the cable is re-connected the inner drive has a square end that fits in the square socket in the g/box housing & likewise at the speedo end.If this aint lined up both ends when the collar is screwed on then "no drive to the speedo" or "erratic drive to speedo".

I'm suprised the garage didn't think to re-check that the inner drive cable or sensor wire had been re-attached properly after clutch had been fitted.

No problem with speedo before clutch/problem with speedo after clutch = possible problem with garage.

Suprised you've not got a Check Engine Light. Odo on my old car broke, never got round to fixing it, but the speedo did work, until the cable snaped, was ok, but did get a CEL, which was a pain in the ***.

Technically, it is illegal. But how will anyone ever know? It isn't tested as part of the MOT, and if you get pulled for speeding, I assume you wouldn't be daft enough to use a defecive speedo as an excuse .
