And if you live up here, you can see 'em training quite often, as they are based at Scampton, the ex-Dambuster, and Pathfinder base, about 20 miles from us.
They train over the Trent Valley.
And if you like aircraft, 20 miles further, there is a bombing range at Donna Nook.

I like to fish remote lochs in the Scottish highlands and just occasionally, once every few years, I get a really close encounter with a Tornado (usually) on a training flight.
I know I should be complaining about the noise etc. but it is just an amazing experience to be standing there, perhaps 10 miles from the road, when all of a sudden the silence is ripped apart by this amazing machine screaming over my head. They are supposed to keep above 250 feet but I've stood on banks of lochs where the banks are not high enough to warrant a contour on the map and looked straight into the planes. I would doubt if they had 50 feet on the loch.
While I love the peace and quiet of a remote loch when the only big noise is putting a few grouse up at my feet I must also say that the occasional passing of one of these aircraft at low level does leave me in awe.

Climbing in the Trossachs a couple of years ago, we were hanging off a vertical face about 150 feet up and two tornados passed about 50 feet below us and about 100 feet away from us.
They were banked sharply over turning from one valley into another.
The problem was neither of us heard them coming until they were on top of us.
They were awesome.
But to say we shat ourselves would be a colossal understatement.

Regularly used to watch the tornados "play fighting" in the Yorks Dales. A truely amazing sight to see them in the dales beneath you. As a kid it was kinda cool to give em a quick wave and know that they have seen you as they waggle their wings.
How the hell they ever saw us when they were travelling at god knows what speed I'll never know. Surely they should have been concentrating on missing hills !
Best one is the massive transporter planes which follow the river and they just appear in your mirror in the car.

saw the red's a couple of years ago while in Jersey. They arrived on the island one evenign while we were walking along the beach, fantastic sound as they did a quick "Hello Jersey" demo right over our heads.
They went on to do a show in formation with a 747 a couple of days later - now THAT was impressive.

I love watching jets and helicopters on excercise and something I still regret now not going into as a career when I had the opportunity.
I will never forget going low level night flying in a Puma down at RAF Odiham and I was at the door and had my legs hanging out. All I needed was a **** off big machine gun and the theme playing from Tour of Duty
Remember as a kid going on a school trip to Cumbria and saw loads of jets flying through the valleys and was amazed. Used to holiday down at Newquay at Watergate Bay as well and stay at the hotel that was right next to the American Air base and watch them fly out in the mornings and go on excersise with Nimrods and then return late afternoon. They would go right over the beach and the hotel and it was fantastic

I was hiking in N.Wales a few years ago when 2 Tornados flew along the valley below us, also out in the Falklands had F4 Phantoms buzz us on the ranges and take part in our live fire demo, ammo replens by Hercules C130 is also amazing when they fly low enough to lob pallets of ammo out the back with no need for a parachute.
