Question

...this is probably a really daft question but is it possible to get connected to a telephone exchange which doesn't serve the area you live in but is adjacent to where you live? Maybe I should explain.....

The exchange which serves us has been ADSL enabled but we live outside the magic 5.5km limit to be able to get the service. The next town down the hill is getting ADSL on December 17th and I know we live within range of the exchange that serves it. I'm wondering if it's possible to get hooked up to there instead?

Cheers
Kav

Not an engineer but I had the same problem in one of our offices at Gatwick Airport.

Some building had lines coming from a converted exchange and some had lines coming from an exchange that was not converted for DSL.

Simply call BT and ask them to install a phone line from the converted exchange, then order DSL on that line.

BT may want to charge you for out of area exchange lines ie fed from an exchange which they state is not your area.

Also most of BTs external cabling is star wired from the serving exchange out, but it will depend on how BT have wired your area and how it has changed since originally planned ie from back in the 50s, new houseing estates have gone up, BT have artionalised exchanges etc.

One other thing is the tele no. may have to change if you are serviced from a different exchange.

You will need to keep on a BT to see if they will do what you are after, but be prepared for some head banging as you will proberbly be talking to a clueless call centre in India.

Hello

The short answer is "no". As several people over on www.adslguide.org.uk have been trying to do this as they are exactly in the middle of two exchanges but they are connected to the non-adsl enabled one.

The slightly longer answer is maybe if you are willing to pay BT the several thousand pounds it would costthem. And even then they may say no.

Steve.

** Edited for spelling.

Thumbs up

Interesting - thanks chaps.

Simply call BT and ask them to install a phone line from the converted exchange, then order DSL on that line
cmdcorrado - Did you manage to do this then?
The short answer is "no".
Steve - Do you know anyone who has tried and failed? (Sorry - tried looking at the URL but couldn't find any reference to it)

Cheers
Kav

It does my head in when people reply to these threads without having first hand experience or the correct knowledge to give definate answers.

The following is fact.

All of the 16 offices I look after have a broadband link to the net.

Initially our Gatwick office could not have DSL because the exchange which the existing phone lines were connected to was not converted for DSL.

Many other offices / buildings at Gatwick Airport had DSL. I found out that these offices had their lines coming from a converted exchange.

I find out the name of the exchange which is converted.

I ring BT Business order line, request a new telephone line to be installed from the exchange that has been converted to our office. No extra charges.

At the same time BT took my order for DSL.

The line was installed 5/12/2003.

BT are coming on Thursday to bring the BT router etc. and connect us.
