OK, so its a bit embarrassing to admit to watching it - but It has become somewhat compulsive viewing.
Proof, if ever proof was needed that the great british voting public are fecking insane
They voted Lisa Scott-Lee's brother out, they voted Roxanne out (and she was most definately a Pop Idol), keeping in nice but dull Chris, nice but dim Mark and that well overweight, less than attractive useless Glaswegian lass with the horrendous nasal twang to her voice, Michelle.
Then on Saturday, out goes Sam, who was the only one left worth anything.
Just what are people doing...I'm completely bewildered.
Michelle is probably going to win. FFS she can sing quite well, except for the fact that her range is poor and that fecking awful nasal twang she has.
Pete summed it up - its not about music...
Oh, and for the record I don't know ANYONE in Scotland that is voting for her...its embarassing

Diablo, i agree with you about the voting, but to me Sam and Mark are almost indistinguishable vocally, they're both good, but nothing special or distinctive. However, i reckon that Michelle's version of "Without you" could have got to number one - seriously. I sort of know what you mean about the nasal thing, but i can't agree, on that evidence, that she has a limited range.
But, if it's safe to say it, if she does win, apart from the one or two hits she'll be guaranteed from the novelty vote, i can't see her fame being long-lived if she doesn't change her appearance big time. I'm not saying that's right, just the way it is.
Personally, i think the contestant with the only really original voice was geeky Chris. But again, his image let him down. And hopefully Alex Park's follow-up single will be more carefully considered than her debut, without all the awkward note changes in the middle of words - who's bright idea was that???
Still yet to hear anything come remotely close to Will Young though, i have to say. The boy can sing, whatever you think of him.

Michelle was truly bad on Saturday. I agree her range is terrible - she's fine belting out the high stuff but really, really struggled in other parts.
I've never liked her nasal twang - it grates big time.
Telboy, you're right. It's so obvious she of all people (if she wins) will be (a rather large) flop after 1 single.
Pete Waterman is full of it though - if it's that bad I take it he won't be judging on the next series then?

The wife watches this avidly, and I have to agree it is compulsive. Mind you lost interest when the first fit bird got voted off.
I agree Michelle's range is bad, she admitted it herself when she said she is in the middle and struggled with the highs and lows of the song. Mark is absolute crap, his cheesy smile between song lines is sooooooooo cabaret!!
Sam was good, I disagree he and Mark were the same, he has got a unique voice.
I hope Mark wins, reckon he knows he aint good enough and it'll be nice and short (career wise)

Completely Karaoke...............
There has not been any decent singers in the competition this year. Mark is karaoke king himself.
And i hope ten ton tessy don't get sea sick, cos she mapped out a life of cabaret singing on the cruise ships !
If you compare this years competition to last year !
Need i say more.

Saw this for the first time a couple of weeks back - they were doing Beatles songs - haven't seen it since. Said then that the only one who could actually sing rather than screech/yell (like Houston, Carey, Dion, Bolton, etc.) was Michelle.
Still unless the industry starts to move away from the importance of the visual image she'll get nowhere.

Of course it is. Straight out of Butlins, just like the knobbly knees contest. Very cheap, very sad, and it will ultimately destroy UK pop music (if it hasn't already).

One program is not responsible for today's pop music scene. The state of the industry is down to the record companies being too scared to try something different anymore, radio stations being fixated on the dance culture and that whereas 10, 15 years ago you could pop down the local boozer to listen to an upcoming band, now all you get is Tracey from Crumpsall belting out a hideous rendition of 'I will survive' (which unfortunately she does) on the karaoke machine.

I agree tiggers. Sure, some people might begrudge pop "wannabes" being given their chance in this fashion, but how else could you realistically do it? Surely if we discover people like Will Young and Alex Parks (and even Gareth Gates on behalf of all the eleven year old girls in the country), then that's a good thing??
I'm not sure i understand the criticism of the "format" of the programme.

Guys
I've just removed some comments about TurboKitty. She no longer has the ability to respond / defend herself on here, so I would be greatful if you would leave her name out of things in future.
Thanks in advance.

Ok, liking a bit of ruff up the chuff or slurping from the furry cup does not necessarily affect singing performance. On the other hand, having no talent most definitely does.

UB, ok if Gary Jules is your thing, but we're talking mainstream pop here, the charts, whatever you want to call it.
My specific question is WHY single out the winners of Pop Idol as peing unworthy of their success in the charts? If you hadn't known Will Young for example had won last year's competition, would you still be slagging him off? I'll bet all the tea in Tescos the answer to that is NO!! Although of course we'll never prove it.
It all just sounds like an irrational rant to me.

I'm not a fan of pop in general but if Pete Waterman etc. hadn't signed Kylie all those years ago (when she couldn't sing) then I wouldn't have seen her live in Paris (droool), I wouldn't have her Love Kylie calendar on my wall at work and I wouldn't have bought her undies for my partner.
That Pete Waterman ain't so bad you know

I single them out as they are at the thin end of a very cynical manipulative wedge. At least when I were a lad we all knew that pop music was crap. It never pretended to be anything else. If you wanted to hear serious music, you bought an album.
These new breed of karioke lamers take it all so seriously. They really believe that are real performers, even though their two minute career shelf life and zero success anywhere outside England PROOVE otherwise.

So Will Young, number one in both album and singles charts, after having been out of the spotlight for nearly a year, is NOT a "real" performer?? C'mon.
