Just seen that the TAX office will issue you with an £80 fine if you do not TAX your car within 30 days of expiry of old disc OR even if you are to keep your car off the road.
Its an AUTOMATIC fine! What about the Gypsies who don't register their vehicles, or tax them, or MOT them, or insure them?? NOTHING will happen to them - only to poor old Joe Public who is on holiday for 4 weeks!!

1 SIMPLE solution to this
GET RID OF RAOD TAX
Add 1pence per litre fuel and the EVERYONE will pay
I dont drive as many mile as the business user who pays the same road tax as me but uses the road 10 times more!
You cant drive your car without fuel so it's very simple

Wow, I'm so glad that I live in Germany where the motorist has power over the government!
Even better, when I drive back to the UK for Christmas, with German plates I don't have to worry about those speed cameras and theres no chance of coming accross mobile traffic cops!

Maybe the government should start chasing up the TWO MILLION untaxed (and thus probably uninsured, un-MOTed, un-roadworthy etc.) cars that are out there at the moment, before jumping out from behind bushes to catch the generally law-abiding motorist!!!

You are saying that you want PC Plod to get off his **** and do proper police work for a change. I know Plod take the stick when its the people up stairs who give the orders, but fancy doing a job that is not worth doing. I mean by this muggers rapists molesters the real nasty people never get what they deserve, but the poor old motorist gets it all. I wonder if they get brownie points. (flame suit on)

= another reason for scum to break into your car
The SORN business is OK for the average situation, but...
My car was in the garage for a new gearbox, about 6 weeks before tax was due to expire. Therefore off road and undriveable. Garage promised job would take no more than 3 weeks. The time slipped of course, and one week before tax expiry realised we weren't going to get the car back in time. Couldn't apply for tax because couldn't get MOT. Applied for SORN, then had to apply for tax a week later when gearbox was complete. Double effort required on my part, and had to drive untaxed while situation was resolved.
As has been said many times, it is the innocent law-abiding citizen like me that gets inconvenienced while the criminals carry on regardless.
Phew! good 2p's worth.

Agree totally about abolishing road tax. That penny a litre would probably provide not only road tax, but an insurance fund to provide third party liability to every road user. In that way, you also get rid of the uninsured drivaer problem at the same time.
This would stop the huge claims for injuries and the like being paid for by the insurance companies and therefore subsidised by us!
Granted it would cost a few jobs at the DVLA, but it would be a massive vote winner!

Penny a litre?
If the average driver does 12,000 miles a year at 30mpg, he's getting through 400 gallons, or 1820 litres. That'll gain a whole eighteen pounds twenty pee for the treasury.
Think 10p per litre (more by the time the fuel companies and garages have bumped up their margins to suit) and you'd be a lot closer.

Reduced proportionally to account for all the untaxed drivers that now have to pay Call it 8p a litre.
The only slight inconsistency is that this would be a tax on fuel used, not on miles covered. I have no objection, but it isn't strictly fair if the intent is to charge for road use is it? (Although thirstier cars probably cause more damage (heavier/more powerful)).
There would be a massive incentive for people to switch to more fuel efficient cars and the tax take would reduce. Back to 10p again

I want to park my motorcycle on the road. So I need tax. But its winter, so I'm not riding it. So I'm not insured.
HOW DO I TAX MY BIKE? It needs tax to be parked on the road, but I can't buy any!

The bike is currently taxed (its my wifes)
The bike is actually parked off the street.
My insurance policy allows me to ride others bikes.
My wife is not insured on the bike.
I cannot renew the tax.
Bugger!
