Hi dodge,
I got done about 3 years ago for 97mph in a 70mph and got 5 points and a £350 fine so based on that you will be looking at around 4/5 points and a fine from £200-£300. Having said that the ludicrous system in this country means you could get a lot less or a bit more, hopefully you get a lot less. Hopefully you have a clean license currently.
You could of course try the send it back unsigned ploy, but I don't personally know anyone who's tried it.
If I were you and this was on the advice of a solicitor specialising in this field - if it goes to court I would don the suit, clean up nicely, go to court in person, plead guilty and say you are sorry and it won't happen again (do not say you didn't know what speed you were doing) and try and get some proof you need a car for your job just in case although at that speed you should be OK.
Sorry I can't be any more help than that. Oh yeah and the next thing that will probably happen will be that the 'holier than thou' brigade who hang around on a performance car forum (go figure) will contribute to this post telling you you shouldn't speed etc. etc. Just ignore them.
Good luck,
tiggers.

I got done a few years back on the M4 for doing 124mph and got a 21 day ban, £325 fine and no points. A bit stupid I know. A mate who got done for 114mph on the M40 was given a 3 month ban and a £100 fine at the same court, which was Beaconsfield.

Nat - How come no points? I don't understand the logic of that. Seems like a good result in the circumstances. BTW I am all for a bit of speed in the right circumstances. I was driving in the glorious days before the 70 limit

David, I've no idea
I spoke to my Solicitor who said it wasn't really worth him attending as a ban will happen but the duration is down to the Magistrates on the day. I was also advised not too bang on about how I needed my licence for work, I basically put my hands up and apologised for what I'd done and said whatever the fine I will pay it now. There were quite a few people up on the same day as me and no-one apart from me got banned and some where up to 105/110mph. This was in 1994.

Just to clarify the normal criteria.
In a 30mph limit, you will be offered a ticket at speeds up to 49mph. Anything higher and you have to go to court.
In a 40,50,60 and 70mph limit, you will be offered a ticket for speeds up to 26mph above the limit.
However, if you get stopped at the time, this might alter slightly. I know when I was on traffic, I used to get fed up with people getting hammered at court whilst billy burglar got a slap on the wrists. Depending on the circumstances, on the motorway, I quite often gave people a ticket for speeds in excess of 100mph! Quite a few traffic cops feel the same way, so if your lucks in, you might get stopped by one of them.

IRRC, You either get totted up points to make you go over 12 points and get banned that way (when you get the licence back it will have no points) OR you get banned for X amount of time and your licence stays 'as is' (so if you've already got 3 points, you will still have 3 points after the ban).
Having a ban on your licence is far WORSE than having 1-11 points!!! Many insurance companies WILL insure you with points but WON'T even look at you if you've had a ban (even if it is for only a short time).

Sorry but that is not exactly true.
I had a ban (28 days) with no points given and a previously clean license.
My car insurance (admittedly not a Scooby at the time) went down when it came for renewal. My motorbike insurance also went down that was with the ban declared to both companies the day I got the ban.
Apparently they looked at the length of the ban and the offence. Obviously SP50 was looked on slightly differently to a DD!

I was insured through the RAC for the car and Dome Insurance for the bike at the time.
In fact the RAC had to record one point on the record as there system wouldn't accept a ban without points being there!

I think you have displayed a very sensible attitude and I congratulate you for that.
Can't help on the insurance bit, I suspect it will change between companies. With a bit of luck yours won't change-high enough as it is!
I hope it is just a fixed penalty, but if you do have to go to court then the advice above is good. No "BS", and just apologise for your "oversight".

Why do you feel the need to apologise for speeding in a 70mph zone?
Most people appear to break the speed limit on motorways if the road condtions allow, and yet those very same people will think your a danger to society for doing ~90mph on a motorway but will quite happily sit at 80mph saying "that's okay". My parents probably fall into that group.
So what gives them the right to say its okay to 80, but not 90? I'd hazzard a guess at social acceptance myself.
It's a bit like saying it's okay to steal a sweet or two out of the pic'n'mix as you walk around Woolworths, but you should be locked up, if you take without paying, the box of choc's off the shelf further along.
Does anyone know of a person who has filled in an insurance claim form yet and put the cause of the accident as "I was looking at my speedo to make sure I wasn't breaking the limit"...... it can't be far away.
