So I took out Matrix reloaded 27/10/03 Due back 29/10/03. Dog had it and destroyed it on the 28/10/03.
I phone up on the 28/10/03 to see how much it's gonna cost me
ME "I'm sorry, my dog has destroyed the dvd, how much will it cost me?"
Video place ""Have we any insurance sir?"
ME "No, how much will it be?"
Video place "It wouldn't have cost you anything IF you'd have had insurance"
ME "Oh well, i haven't! So how much?"
Video Place "It's unusual for folk NOT to have any, I suppose you'll be taking it out now then"
ME (Getting agitated now) "Look I don't mean to be rude but I decided 3 years ago NOT to take your insurance because it costs £20 per year. In my book, that means that you would have had £60 out of me by now! A DVD costs £20 tops so that's why i didn't take cover out. Now how much do I owe you"?
Video place "I'm not the manager, she will call you after lunch"
ME "OK, thanks"
About 16:00hrs I get a call from the same video oik
Video Place "Sorry, she's not back until tomorrow. We'll call you back"
ME "OK"
I then forgot all about it and indeed the phonecall never came. This morning there was a letter from the video place telling me that Matrix was over due.
I call them and they say £45 please! I say £45 bollox! Now here's the rub, they have no record of my conversation with them on the 28/10/03 or rather the oik concerned doesn't so where do I stand here. Will I have to pay do you think given that I made first contact and tried to initiate a proceedure/method of paying and up until today have always intended to pay for a damaged DVD. They are trying to do me for overdue fees which obviously will be plenty more.
£45 The film wern't even that good

They may not have a record of the conversation, but you will on your phone bill, ok it doesnt show who you spoke to but will show you had a lengthy conversation with someone.
If the shop in question is an independant you may have some hassle, if it is a chain then the manager will probably be concerned you will take it further (head office) and may just 'overlook it this time' to avoid problems.

Sorry, but in this case I would have called them the next day when they failed to call me back. It seems a little unfair, but given the way customer service is in this country (i.e. ****e) you really should have followed this up yourself.
Technically you shouldn't be paying overdue fees, but ... maybe you should pay the shop a visit and see if you can persuade the oik to remember the conversation if you know what I mean
TBH would have been easier to stop the dog getting it in the first place
tiggers.

Take it back in what's left of the box you mean
Gotta agree though, it's a shame that it was left to a customer to follow up his own debt LOL Mental note to self <Don't forget to phone the video place to see how much you owe them> I would have thought they would have accepted a bit of responsibility here.
Never mind!
Oh bonus!! Just got a call back.
"If you take out our insurance for the rest of the year, that'll be £5, we'll waive the over due charge"!!
WTF
Not complaining though, but how bizarre Must be targeted for insurance or summat!

lol... rental copys are different in alot of cases tothe HMV version, you'll find if u can get your hands on ex rentals they can be worth more money int he future than an ordinary copy.
as said a rental DVD casts about £80, sure its a major rip off so £40 doesnt sound too bad although as said you have a phone bill so use it mite be able to pursuade them otherwise with a bit of shouting n stuff

Just take the £5 insurance. Then when they have written off your overdue charges you can now say your dog just ate it this morning. Then they can use their own internal claims procedure and won't give a toss as long as stock check adds up.

Not sure why rental copies are more expensive, but tis true they are about 80 quid. I found that some are 'special' copies, for example, got out some film, not sure which, to find that there were no funky animated menus or bonus features, as you'd get on the normal copy (which a mate got a day later). maybe the cost is due to them being special presses of the dvd? not sure tbh

You think 45 is bad? I remember some of the tapes we used to hire out when I was younger (parents used to have a shop) cost us over 4 times that
A retail DVD is sold on the basis it will be watched by one person / family. A rental one is sold so that it can be viewed by multiple people / families. It is very unlikely the renters are going to go out and buy their own copy so for obvious financial reasons rental copies cost a lot more to buy.

Rental tapes/dvd's cost more because your paying for a muilti user licencing agreement, although from what i was told some years ago they can only be rented 200 iirc times.

That 200 times thing probably only applied to tapes because the quality got a bit dodgy when they'd be watched that many times, and the caring, sharing distributors didn't want Joe Punter to think he was getting **** quality videos. I'm sure it's unlimited with DVDs now.

all video shop oiks are fat spotty out of shape, mars bar eating, nerds, so go in there and "windmill" the first employee you see, leave £19.99 on the counter and walk out.
that should see the end of it.
good luck

Rental copies used to be more expensive because they came out before the retail ones.. but why now when they come out at the same time I dunno?
Surely you should be a candidate not to get insurance as you have shown risk?!
LOL

I remember years ago when Jurassic Park was coming out soon and there was a huge amount of hype about it, HMV were selling rental copies for £110 each.
(It came out on rental a few weeks earlier than retail sale)
People were actually paying that much for it too!!!!!
