Probably a stupid question but is there any reason (apart from annoying the hell out of the person sitting next to me) that I can't use a portable minidisc player on a plane?

No problem, just wait until the seat-belt signs have gone out, order a nice drink (I always like G&T) and plug in!

Not a problem - just don't use it during takeoff/landing.
