Chaps,

I have a MY98 5dr with the standard Philips unit. I want to replace it with a Minidisc unit, not bothered about CD or MD changer at present.

I know very little about incar ICE so any thoughts are more than welcome.

I can probably get a good deal on any of the Sony kit, do any of you have recommendations etc.

In the first instance I'm not concerned about changing the speakers, although having read some of the posts it looks likely that I will when funds permit.

My funds will be limited, so I am prepared to upgrade slowly, hopefully the standard speakers will surfice.

Ric

I've got an MY95 5dr with a Sony MD h/u.... really impressed with it. Also have the 10 Disc CD under the seat.

Have a look in my profile for my website, and check out the piccies.

Cool

Hi Dan, had a look on your site, car looks really well. Did you try the minidisc with the standard speakers before upgrading to the JBLs?

As well as the Sony, others have rated the Kenwood MD units - and you may be able to get a last of the line 9xx model from last year's range? Certainly folk were getting bargain 9080 top of the range Kenwood CD headunits on uk.rec.audio.car for that sort of cash recently.

Go for the Sony C800-REC
great MD tuner plus you can record off the tuner while driving with a single button with
other great features .

Aziz, what security does the unit have, is it a face off?

I got a Sony Cd head unit with a six disk MD multi changer and a remote stick fitted with a mobile handsfree kit (that I supplied) for £400. Telephone comes through the speakers and mutes, etc. Very good price I thought.

On standard speakers at the moment, which are very good for standard speakers (fitter also said this), but forget turning the volume above 1/2 to 3/4. Total distortion.

A few years ago I bought a Sony MD head unit from Makro for £150 (wife has this one now).

Another way forward would be to buy a portable MD player (I paid £100 for a recordable Sony) and use a tape adaptor from Argos (£10). I did this whilst waiting for my equipment to arrive and be fitted.

Cheers Phill C

Phil,

Already have a Sony MZR70, but it was the sound quality from the standard unit that is really getting to me. So, by using the portable unit I won't gain a great deal, other than being able to use my minidiscs sooner! I intend visiting a few stores this weekend to get a idea of the cost of kit locally. Thanks for the info.

OK, I've just popped round to Halfords (don't all cringe at once!) as they are next to the office. Had a listen to a Sony MDXGA580 @ £229, I paired this up with several different speakers, but the two I liked (I know I said I wasnt bothered about speakers) were the JBL GTO525 (£50 pair) and the Infinity 552i (£60 pair). I prefered the JBL's, I like the bass sound.

The sales chap then pointed me in the direction of a Sony MDX6500 for £180, aparently last years model to the one I was looking at, and they have only changed the display graphics.

I can hear my credit card screaming already......
