Hi there,
I think most units wil fit if the surround is removed from the front panel.
I have, at the moment a UK spec. Sony double-din CD/Cassette/Tuner unit, no minidisc mind you, although it will control the minidisc changer.

Question

Hi folks,

I've just picked up a Legacy GTB, but it has a gapping hole in the dash where the stereo etc used to be. I went to fit a headunit I had lying around -- only to find that the width of the hole/cage in the dash is too narrow for it . Am I correct in thinking that Japanese ICE is narrower than what we have here in the UK? Is this (narrow) width the double-DIN standard?

Assuming it's double-DIN stuff I need, can anyone recommend where I gan get a reasonably priced unit (must have MiniDisc)?

Cheers,
Colin.

P.S.
What is the difference (dimensions) between DIN and ISO-DIN?

Unfortunately removing the surround won't help . The actual body (metal casing) of a standard headunit is too wide for the hole in the dash (probably by about 15mm... I'll measure it tonight). Any other suggestions... other than dash board surgery!

Well it looks like my existing MD headunit will fit. The unit is 178mm wide, the cage in the dash is 173mm. I can fit it as follows:
* remove the center dash
* Thankfully there's enough flex in the cage to squeeze the main body of the headunit in
* remove the trim/bezel from the front of the headunit
* the pop-off front of the MD headunit now sits flush with the center dash (as opposed to proud as is usually the case)

Thanks to V5-APS for the "remove the surround" tip or I might have needlessly spent a good £500 on a Subaru specific custom unit.
