hit and run / swindon / yesterday evening...

Chap at work has just put this email out and I thought I might try to help him by putting out this post. His girlfriend was hit by a yobbo whilst sat in her car, the car then drove off. Perhaps you were in the area at the time (remote chance I know) or perhaps you have any suggestions of how he could track this fella down.
I feel like Shaw 'keep'em peeled' Taylor (for those of you old enough to remember him).
Anyway, here is his email which gives a lot more detail: -
On Tuesday 31st Sept at about 17:00, on the roundabout where Cirencester Way
starts from Elgin Drive near Gorse Hill, my girlfriend was a victim of a hit and run
incident. My girlfriend was stationary in traffic which was queued due to one lane of
Cirencester way being closed by road works. A youngish looking guy with brown / light
brown hair came too fast around the roundabout and smashed into the rear near side
corner of my girlfriends car. This shunted her forward by about 2 yards. The guy then
drove off!! As well has significant damage to my girlfriends car my girlfriend has
suffered sever whiplash and can hardly move her head and shoulders. Fortunately she
suffered no other serious injury.
The car is described as a Ford Escort or Orion, possibly a mark II shape, dirty white
and had been modified slightly with front and side skirts. We think it also had a rear
spoiler. A witness said that the registration was G814 PVO. The police at the scene
tried searching for this registration but found no matches. Possibly the last three
letters might be different.
Having spoken to the police it is unlikely that they will investigate further as no match
was found for the registration. Hence this posting and my plea to all of you.
I’m offering £50 to anyone that can give me any significant information that results in
us tracking down this guy and the car. I’m talking about a name, or address or a
confirmation of the registration, etc.. This is a very genuine offer. It’s a very distinctive
car which one of you might recognise. He might be your neighbour, you might know
where he works. Timing is critical because we need to try and track him down before
he has time to repair any damage to his vehicle that would link it to the collision with
my girlfriends car. The chances are this guy doesn’t have insurance anyway in which
case we’ll not be able to claim against him. Even so, £50 is well worth getting him
caught and prosecuted. This guy has inflicted pain and injury to my girlfriend and she
also faces a large insurance excess to fix her car ... all for sitting in traffic on her way
home from work minding her own business.
You can e-mail me here at work, post a message on forums or drop me a note via
internal mail. My contact details are in the address book on compass. Do it all
anonymously if you wish. Not everyone reads forums so please pass the word on to
your friends and colleagues. £50 isn’t bad for what might be just a few minutes effort.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and for any information that you
might be able to give me.

Using Dunk's tip, the first web site my mate went into(Egg) told him the reg belongs to a Ford Orion. Why can an internet do a better job than the police in finding a car?
Answer on the back of a speeding ticket please...

Mate phones up the local Busys and asks the question "how comes I have found the reg and you lot couldn't?". Through a muffled phone, my mate could hear the police officer say to her mate "oh dear looks like the officer on duty has not checked the reg properly".
After much apologising, the police now have an address and will be paying a little visit to our friend.
Lets hope the car still has the damage on it to prove he it was at the scene of the accident.
My mate says thanks again to you all. I was just imagining if it had been my missus with my 3 kids in it. The little ****.

They'll weasel their way out of it :-(. It's my brother's/Dad's/Uncle's car or 'no I wasn't driving it'. Worth checking if there's any decent CCTV nearby on the off chance though.
Police should impound and crush the car in these circumstances, not matter what it is. Then deliver the 'cube' back to the owner's front garden (after all it's his property :-)
Vindaloo.

latest update from my mate: -
Please send 'Dunk' a virtual beer from me thanking him for his suggestion.
Unfortunately it doesn't qualify him for the £50 as we've not managed to track the owner down ... yet!!!
We've now managed to track the vehicle down our selves with no help from the police and take photo's but the police still aren't interested. When we took the photo's a patrol car went by. We flagged it down saying that we'd located the car involved in a hit and run but they weren't interested at all saying that we should phone the station and speak to the investigating officer. The car has no tax or insurance and should be clamped / impounded / crashed ... whatever.
I was told at one point when I phoned the station that they'd probably send a letter to the registered keeper asking them if it was them who was driving at the time!! How ridiculous is that!!! That guy has now had nearly a week to sort his story out and we don't stand a chance. Who knows, if the reg number had been keyed properly at the time they could have gone straight to the registered keepers house before they had time to figure out what they were going to do. If the police had acted promptly we might have had him.
The only other suggestion is that we write to the chief who, being a civil servant, is obliged to reply and therefore, obliged to investigate the situation. I think a letter to him and the local press is the next stage of the process.
I'll keep you posted on progress as it might be useful info for your fellow 'Scoobynet' buddies should anything like this happen to them.

This post just about sums up all thats wrong with this country today.
If they are not sat by the side of the road trying to catch you speeding then they could not a **** about crime. How hard would it be for them to call round and take action.
We pay god knows how much in tax per year, surely we deserve better than this.
