Eat Lobster, drink Sam Adams beer, go do a "see the whales" boat trip, go to the Bunker Hill district and see the rich people, soak up the atmosphere around the market and marvel at the mixture of old and new. Don't forget the Boston tea party ship and other relics of Bostons proud past and other relics of the time before they booted the English out.

Jump around shouting, "ha! We'll tax coffee next time"...
Take some time to find out more about the history of the USA whilst you're there, especially independence. Fascinating!
Have a drink in the cheers bar, it's not at all what you expect inside. Oh, and take ID... I was 27 and had to show ID - show I showed 'em my car keys as Hertz don't hire to people under 25
Take in a baseball game with some fans if you can, that's a great experience too.

been a couple of times. Fenway for a Bo-Sox game is compulsory (although the season is winding up now) . Sam Adams doesn't give you a hangover ( no matter how hard I tried ). Good shopping, good food ( clam chowder is ). Nice people.

There's an exhibition of the 'Big Dig' I think now ... basically one **** tunnel they dug to sort out some of the traffic. Massive engineering feat.

I'd also recommend taking a trolly bus tour as an inexpensive way of getting an overview of the city. You can then decide which bits you want to spend more time looking at.
Going over to Cambridge is worth a punt - Harvard is pretty impressive if you like that sort of thing. Loads of bars and places to eat around Harvard Square too.

BTW when I was last there late 2002 the whole place was dug up (probably for the big dig mentioned above) and the whole road system was completely screwed up.
We drove there and it was great fun trying to navigate through road works, no roadsigns, etc (NOT)

I forgot about the duck tour!!! I really wanted to go myself but we didn't have time in the end. Saw it go past though and it looked funny.

RayT - you mean the Copley plaza. As far as I remember, its a shopping center as well.
The main shopping places I have shopped in Boston:
Cambridge Galleria (expensive shops)
Prudential Center (has huge building with restaurant on top - good but not cheap)
Filenes - good general 'Allders' type store with a pikey (can I say that ) bargain basement - real brands cheap.
Its a beautiful city. Where will you be staying? Its only a buck on the 'T' (the tube type thing) to go anywhere, and you can link to the burbs on the commuter rail - you pay on board for these normally - the 'T' uses tokens.
As I mentioned above, take a duck tour on the Charles river (I think). Its not cheap, but is excellent.

If you fancy a journey (are you hiring a car?) you could head up to Six Flags New England. There are some cool rides (I would compare it to chessington world more than alton towers though.
New York isnt too far away (I think 200 miles) its easy to drive there on a friday say, and return on a sunday.
Sceninc things? Mount Washington, north of Boston - its a huge mountain type thing (surprisingly! ) If you are on the freedom trail in Boston itself, then there is lots to see - its odd to see 200 year old churches etc in the middle of a load of skyscrapers! Bunker hill is a big needle type thing with a museum - you can go to the top and get fantastic views of Boston.
TBH - its hard to get bored there! I'm only young, so can't go drinking there, but there are many bars surrounding the MIT and UMAS campuses that are full of studenty types that are cheap, and like London, there are 'classy' bars near the financial center.
There is loads to see and do in Boston. I really would suggest buying a tour guide type book, as all my memories are kind of vague - my Dad 'dragged' me to most of the above places!

LOL- try and drive into Manhattan on Friday and you'll get there just in time to return Sunday. Traffic makes central London look deserted. Also parking can be had as cheaply as $15 for the first 1/2 hour!!!

I was there last May.
TBH I found it to be very, very dull. We had a week scheduled there but left for Cape Cod 3 days early.
No night life to speak of that we saw.

We did the whale tours and were so lucky. Apparently, the sea was the busiest with whales and dolphins the guide had seen in over 20yrs of doing it. The boat had to stop for nearly an hour as we were surrounded by all sorts of sea life.
We stayed in Provincetown. It wasn't until we got there that we realised it is the chosen resort of America's gay community, but was still a good laugh and very friendly with lots of decent bars and restaurants.
We stayed here and would recommend it highly. Really clean and great value for money. Really nice people:
