SPECIALIZED. Filip Meirhaeghe just won the 2003 MTB World Championship on one so they can't be that bad.

Plums. - where are you?

Chaz, at that money best to stay away from full suspension, you will just get lots of weight and no performance. Trek are fine Specialized have some nice bikes but not sure if they do much at that price. Buy one of the comics MBUK etc.. and have a look for people selling last years bikes there are some bargains to be found if you don't mind being a year out of date. Also try Merlin cycles their own frames are very nice, and very competitevly priced.

Unclebuck, Yeah the FSR M4 is just lovely to ride, i have ridden a friends epic with the brain shock, and am not convinced by it. Sometimes it just felt a bit "wrong" don't know if it couldn't react quick enough or what. But it was one of the first ones maybe the newer ones are better.

Depends how much you're spending and what you are using it for. I have a Specialized FSR M4 for cross country, and an Intense Tazer for dirt jumping / bmx track / short course downhilling.

Don't want to spend mega bucks. £400-500 ish
I used to have a GT RTS3 a long time ago (when I was fit) it will only be used a weekends so that I don't become a big blob!

Cord - top choice I'm an FSR man too. I want one of these S-Works FSR with the BRAIN shock technology.

Try www.bonthronebikes.co.uk. They're in Fulham and you get great service and possibly the best deal on new bikes. I just bought a £500 Haro (last years model) for £300 for my girlf from there, alot of bike for the money IMO.

Where you based Chaz?

Alpine Bikes HERE doing excellent deals on 2003 model clearance at the moment.

I'm not an expert, but last mag I browsed had Gary Fisher Marlin as winner of a 4-way "best £500 hardtail" test.

Question

Any roadies among you (timidly)? I've been laying down some miles over the last 6 mos or so and had forgotten how much I love it. never really tried the off-road stuff but i'd like to. Sooo easy to spend a lot of money tho ain't it?

Yep stay away from full go for just front or a ridged frame.
GT is great at that sorta price. IMO of course, may be slightly biased!

check this place out I have a 2000 schwiin Moab SL I bought for £425, with rock shox judys deore xt /lx all round disc brakes ect. Fantastic bike for the price and light too.

good review in mbuk as well.

Schwinn

How about a gary fisher, now there is something a bit special.

Gary Fisher

have a look round the site some very good deals on older model bikes you can ride on a fully loaded deore xt with exspensive rock shox / manitou suspension for the same price as what you would get a run of the mill model from, The bike came ready built (not the normal flat packed delivery. I just had tostraighten the handle bars put the cleats on my spds and ride it.

howdy,
the technology of the full suspension has improved so much over the last few years that a hardtail is not that much better

the specilized are by far the best selling bikes in the U.S. Treks which arn't quite a popular also have a really good rear suspension design.. try and get a demo or rental on several bike befor you buy one its a hefty chunk of change
