Question

Don't know if this has been done before, but what are the most peculiar albums or CD's any of you have come across.

For starters the two most bizarre I know are the 1968 album "The Transformed Man" by William Shatner including the most bizarre cover version of The Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" or how about Hayseed Dixie's "A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC" where some of AC/DC's metal classics get the hillbilly treatment - so bad it's good!!

So come on then - what've you got that can equal these top moments in recording history

Regards,

tiggers.

I've got Eskimo by The Residents, which is weird, and the followup/remix Diskomo is even stranger.

Something I don't have, which would clearly be a prime contender, is Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed, but to be honest it's unlistenable. I tried about two minutes of it and couldn't take any more.

Also to be considered - Weld, by Neil Young. This is the one which is a CD entirely of feedback, and was, I think, part of a 3-CD set for completists only.

But the winner must surely be My Beauty by Kevin Rowland, which was a deeply rum combination. Mad as a box of (chocolate) frogs, you just need to listen to either Daydream Believer or You'll Never Walk Alone (yes, those classics) to hear a mind in meltdown. Whatever drugs he was taking at the time didn't agree with his creative talents. A copy of the album is probably gracing your nearest landfill even now - approx 50,000 copies were pressed, and perhaps 500 were sold. I only heard brief excerpts of the songs mentioned above on Radio 5 and they were interrupted by the presenters pissing themselves laughing.

Or how about White Noise - An Electric Storm by David Vorhaus.

One seriously disturbing album.

Originally released by Island Records in 1969, the debut White Noise album featured Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson, who had worked for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and David Vorhaus, who had studied classical orchestral bass playing and electronics.

Well so far the idea of a CD worth of feedback or a medieval Black Sabbath just about pips William Shatner - I'll need to hear the Sabbath stuff to make the final judgement though

Oh, and sitting in a restaurant in Krakow I heard Brothers in Arms sung in Gregorian chant.

Completely bizarre, especially as I had about two minutes of thinking, 'no, it can't be this.'

OK as nobody seems to have any idea what the Virgin Fugs were then how bout this "Acid Brass" a brass band cover album of late 80's early 90's "acid house" tunes. Highlights a full brass rendition of the KLF's "what time is love"

And what about Dread Zeppelin - sort of 'Elvis meets Bob Marley and stumbles over Stairway' if you see what I mean.

They managed to mix reggae with Heartbeaker (LZ) and Heartbeak Hotel (EP) in a fun-for-three-seconds sort of way, but although the idea's amusing enough, can you imagine a whole album of it?

Confession time - I bought the Dread Zeppelin album (picture disc too ) I really enjoyed it, but then I'm a big Elvis and Led Zep fan...

The Sabbath stuff is partly on their site for download - for example War Pigs: http://www.sabbatum.com/audio/rondellus/sabbatum/01.mp3

I also had the Wombles singles as a child...

How about Alpha Seven's album 'Great Lift Journeys of Norwich'. Consisted of recordings of lift journeys in and around Norwich interspersed with ambient twiddlings. Included classics such as 'The Elizabeth Fry Building' and 'Debenhams'.

Aphex Twin's 'Selected Ambient Works 2' is a well-known 'weird' album. By turn brutal, seriously disturbing and heart-achingly beautiful.

Joe's Garage by Frank Zappa is pretty odd. But seems completely normal when compared to...

...Apostrophe. By, um, Frank Zappa.

Is there a pattern here?

Best album title ever, though, has to be the one with a picture of the aforesaid Mr Zappa with a large red oven mitt on hi hand.

The title? True Glove.

Classic

Edited to say that this is my first ever CORNER!!!

Always thought the cover of Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch was pure class.

I'd agree with that.

Think that is an excellent album - esp. "I come from nowhere" and "drowning witch"

Aphex Twins SAWII isn't weird, it's just ambient. For weirdness probably Expert **** Twiddlers with Mike Paradinas from u-Ziq is a bit bonkers, as is Ventolin for being plain unlistenable. The RDJ Album, I Care Because You Do and Classics contain Sinclair Spectrum loading noise, and samples from Tampax adverts in "Tamphex" such as "Don't stop when the music starts!", "Are you one of those girls that needs time to stand still, once a month?". Also who can forget the lyrics to "Milkman" Bonkers.

Hey, if you're talking about Zappa, you're on my music rack.

If you think Apostrophe is weird, or Joe's Garage is weird, you need to check out Thing Fish. "Dass' right! We da Mammy Nuns!" Or maybe go back to the basics, his first album, titled Freak Out.

He speaks the last line in these lyrics from Old Fart at Play, on the Trout Mask Replica that Telboy mentioned:

Pappy with the Khaki sweatband
Bowed goat potbellied barnyard
The old fart was smart
The old fart was smart
The old gold cloth madonna
Dancin' t' the fiddle 'n saw
He ran down behind the knoll
'n slipped on his wooden fishhead
The mouth worked 'n snapped all the bees

Back t' the bungalow
Momma was flatten'n lard
With her red enamel rollin' pen
When the fishhead broke the window
Rubber eye erect 'n precisely detailed
Airholes from which breath should come
Is now closely fit
With the chatter of the old fart inside

An assortment of observations took place
Mommas licked 'er lips like uh cat
Pecked the ground like uh rooster
Pivoted like uh duck
Her stockings down caught dust 'n doughballs
She cracked her mouth glaze caught one eyelash
Rubbed 'er hands on 'er gorgeous gingham

Her hand grasped sticky metal intricate latchwork-
Open t' the room uh smell coal mixed with bologna
Rubber bands crumpled wax paper bonnets
Fat goose legs 'n special jellies
Ignited by the warmth of the room
The old fart smelled this thru his important breather holes
Cleverly he dialed from within
from the outside we observed
That the nose of the wooden mask
Where the holes had just been uh moment ago
Was now smooth amazingly blended camouflaged in
With the very intricate rainbow trout replica.

The old fart inside was now breathin' freely from his perfume
bottle atomizer air bulb invention.

His excited eyes from within
the dark interior glazed, watered in appreciation of his
thoughtful preparation
