Could someone please help me - apparently there is a way of unlocking a phone without the need to use a data cable?

I might be wrong; but I believe that it is only the newer DCT4 phones that can have the unlock calculated from the IMEI number and SMS'ed to the phone; DCT3 phones require a clip or a data cable and software.
