Ah, the wonders of the Internet. I had to write off to ESA to get a copy of the Ariane 5 launch failure report.

Because I'd just left university having completed a degree in astrophysics, and was interested in finding out. At the time I was working in a software QA department, so as it turned out the report was very relevant as the entire failure was down to poor QA and testing procedures (e.g. "that bit worked on Ariane 4 so we won't have to test it again..." )

This was in 1995 or 1996, when stuff like that wasn't published on the web. Yes, there were things on the web, but it wasn't all-pervasive like it is now. When I did my MSc in 1997 I actually had to look up stuff in a library

Actually a lot of it is crap. Stuff about the history of the space shuttle and how it works, etc. Details of the crew and the science experiments. Of course some of the history is necessary in order to understand the culture at NASA, but I felt it could have been a lot shorter and concentrated on what went wrong, why it went wrong and what they're going to do about it.

I think they should have ditched all the glossy photos too
