i have recently purchased a second hand 100cc go kart off my mate, (who is now on holiday) i test drove it before bying and it worked fine. we went together two weeks ago to a track and it was fine. decidied to service it myself over the weekend and now it does not start up very easily. i'm hoping its the spark plug cos i fitted a new one, but i do not know the correct gap. does anyone know?????

ajm,

i have no idea, and to be honest, no i have no mechanical knowledge, hence the reason why it doesn't work like it should do after i touched it. i thought it would be a standard gap.
i'll try and find out what engine it has.

cheers mate

Does it have a choke?

BOB.T.

cheers mate . there is no choke and i have been told that the engine is an Ital system. will have to check the gap later. i've been told that the spark plug on at the moment is for a 100cc go-kart and should therefore already be at the correct gap, but i will check anyway.

thanks the help and if it still doesn't start easily, i will be back on here later in the week

I'm guessing you used a new plug of the same type, yeah, same heat range?

Maybe try a bit of throttle aswell...my mini moto won't go unless it's on full throttle

I'd try putting the old one back and see if it works, could be a duff plug.

Good luck

As Andy says try the old plug, use this as a guide for the gap as well. it will probably be slightly wider due to wear.

New plug may well be faulty, had a few myself.

Use the old (trusted) plug and connect the HT lead, grip the plug using insulated pliers (insulated is best or the leccy kicks like a mule) hold the plug firmly agaist the head (must be abare metal part of head) and crank it over to check for a spark, you should get a fairly visible spark, this is good. You may well be a break in the plug lead, plug cap or faulty plug if it was fine up until you disturbed them.

if not then a fueling problem unless you changed the points. May be sh*t in the jets/filter/float bowl or even a stuck float.

If you drop it off to me for about a week i guarantee i'll get it going

Jason Crozier is yer man for this but on my Rotax, its 0.4mm on the plugs. When the plugs wear to just 0.6mm its virtually impossible to start.

guys,

Checking the new spark against the old one is an excellent idea, but i threw the old one away (what an idiot)
i checked the plug and set the gap at 25 thou, (i think thats 0.035mm but not sure). played around with the fuel a little - was told to turn both screws on the carb and managed to get her stated with the help of 2 people pushing.

runs like a dream when going, but i'm not sure it should take 2 people for it to go.

i want to try and clean the carb, jets, etc, but due to lack of knowledge, not sure whether to take the risk. Paul where abouts r u?? or how do i get hold of Jason Crozier??

Thanks

Rotax max class is a push Button start water cooled 125CC with Centrifugal clutch (spelling) it's a little easier but you have to use a battery to power the ignition system. your 100CC will have a Motoplat or similar unit to create the spark when the crank turns. I'm not sure how longthe battery lasts but you need a couple if your racing for a day..... about 40mins racing in a meeting.

as for your Ital ..... just cover the air intake to choke on start if you haven't found the problem allready

Try www.karting.co.uk

I race a Max and they are a lot less hassle than a 100cc.

I posted for some advice on karts a while back, I had seen a kart on ebay for about £450 - at the time it would have been a nice toy but circs have now changed anyway

Someone here told me that the 100cc 2 strokes need a rebuild every few hours or so, can they not be detuned to last a bit longer?

This looks a minter :
