Can you really imagine that the politicians would vote for a system that would be able to trace exactly where and when their cars were where they shouldn't be...........now that would make the press happy!

It's in a number of papers this weekend Marc.
Reib: It's an outline proposal drawn up by a Government-Police think tank, yes, this much is true. Yet another example of the current Government's control freak attitude and desire to generate income from as many people in as many ways as possible.
However, the technical infrastructure required to make it a reality is some years away. Even then, if a concerted effort was made to actually turn it into law, there's little doubt that its big brother overtones would cause political uproar.
The current policy in this regard is already becoming an electoral issue. Pushing this forward would make it even more so.
If it's like most of the current Government's previous policies, this version is being deliberately leaked now so that the "real" proposal, when it comes, will be slightly less draconian, thus making the stupid British public think it's not that bad after all.
If you don't like it, don't vote Labour...

Hmm
disagree with the technical infrastructure bit!!!!
the technical side is already in place!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if this has reached the paperwork stage it will or will be going for further discussions asap...
as for the technical bit... how many large citys have cable tv
and one of the grat selling points of cable was " the fibre optic cables can carry millions of pieces of information" and i bet ony a certain percentage is used for phones and TV
once again we have been sold short by this Government.. why
cos unlike the french (bleeergh) we dont protest or take action...
you know your onto a looser when the leading party encourages free speech and free protest,, but then bans it when it works (petrol strikes)
the only way to beat them is to start to push the other partys
into giving us what we want... they rely on the apathy and the " huh look at what they did last time2 attitude to keep em in power!!!!
what we need is a revolution!!!!!!!!!!!

The Tories are already picking up on the "motoring vote" - they're already talking about a more "common sense" transport policy that includes, among other things, removing some speed cameras and removing the Police's ability to gain revenue from their use. Look here for further information.
They're also talking about raising the motorway speed limit to 80mph under certain circumstances. While the article above is pretty nebulous, it seems as though a further policy statement is in the offing, so time will tell whether it mentions anything about this "chipping" scheme.
As with anything like this, a letter to your MP has to be the place to start. Mine is already by the door, waiting to be posted...

It won't work!
IMO if it does go ahead it will fall flat on it's back, there will be organised gangs that will rip down the sensors or vandlize them.
Yes it's A complete waste of tax payers money and aimed at trying to bag a profit out motorists, If they want a system to slow motorists down then they would be better investing the money in building lots of race circuits & speed strips and give the petrol heads virtually free track days and motoring advice.
vote for me and i'll build you ya circuits!

Idea is copyright (C) Monster munch dream driving inc
It's simple you vote for me I become transport minister
I then inject the massive amounts of cash that the govement has available to spend in building race circuits / rally tracks and quater mile time roads. I will have them scatterd around the
country and charge an anual subscription fee of £99.00 inc vat a year.
The sites will have burger and coffee bars to help fund the organisation and there will be a booking fee at £10 a hours sessions , £2.50 for spectators and £1.50 for children and oap's.
These sites will be open from 10am till 9pm 7 days a week.
Also available on each site will be proffesional coaching and advice and saftey officers.
It will be a bit like golf, you can ring up and book your 1 hour session, or just turn up to spectate.
I beleive it will give the motoring Enthusiasts amongst us the chance to drive there cars to the limit, meet good friends and have fun, It will also release any stress and pressure or anger on the tracks making everyone a safe driver on the roads. I will also announce that anyone who is caught speeding or driving dangorous on the main public roads will receive a temporary ban from attending these racing events i,e a global database will take care of this, It will also be a good deterant.
very simple but effective

Part of it will be the ability to generate more money in speeding fines etc. I reckon what they really want is to be able to trace where we all go in our cars. Labour have never liked people to have freedom to go anywhere they want like that. It won't just be for checking on criminals. Greasemonkey said it is all to do with the Big Brother mentality. Spot on I say!

Even if it goes through, I doubt they will ever get it introduced to older cars. What's the betting that cars made today will be exempt?
I can see a lot of people keeping older cars, which cannot be equipped. Transport and roads are not going to change too much in the next 25 years and I would think my "old" scoob will still be able to drive on. But it might look a bit obvious on a motorway all doing 70 MPH to find one car doing 80. Still minor A roads and B roads will still be there for the driving pleasure.

If you look on the DVLA website you can read all about this; it's one of a number of proposals which they are canvassing opinion on. Replies are being actively sought.....

The govt may not pay the cost of fitting them to older cars but they will just insist that owners of older cars pay for the devices themselves and that you cannot put your car on the road without one!

That one's easy to get round. The sensors might not, but the number plate recognition cameras that will probably be installed here and there will. Camera picks you up but sensor doesn't=coppers round your house/charge/fine etc.
