We all think we know who or what MI 5 & 6 are but who are SIS the Secret Intelligence Service? Is it just an umbrella term for MI5 and 6? Or a completely different organisation?

any spooks know?

I'm not a spook (and if I was I guess I wouldn't admit it ), but...as far as I know:

MI5 is the 'domestic' security service, run by the MoD
MI6 is the foreign intelligence service, run by the Foreign Office

SIS is, as far as I'm aware, just another name for MI6.

I'm no Spook , but it's not the ones you know about and have heard of that you should be worried about! MI5 / 6 are the UK equivalent of the CIA in so far as they are the 'public' face of the intelligence services. In the States, there is the DIA - military inteligence - when was the last time you saw them mentioned in the press?? In the UK, there are many other departments using the 'MI' tag - you just don't get to hear about them much

No, there's no MI1,2,3 or 4 now. I believe they existed in WW1, and there were other departments like MI19 in WW2.

a quick flick through the internal MoD phone book will reveal all kinds of interesting intelligence departments...none of which are public...

The American NSA and FEMA also have unbelievable executive powers - well worth reading up on them...

But be careful of you do a search on the web for them, that will just make 'em suspicious and your name will go on the list of those to keep an eye on.

I could tell you how I know this, but then I'd have to kill you

Please note.

MI5 is concerned with domestic intellegence - both gathering and counter.
MI6 is concerned with foreign intellegence - both gathering and counter.
Both the above are civilian organisations and have operational links with all the Armed Services and the Poilce.

Real Intellegence
There is a picture of me on this Website, but it is an old one and I will not tell you which one

SIS is made up

In the USA

CIA is the same as MI5&6. The cover both domestic and foreign intellegence.
NSA is directly responsible for counter intellegence and anti subversive operations and activities domestically.

Both are civilian.

The US Army, Navy, Marine Corp and Air Force all have there own individual Intellegence Corps with a Central Command reporting structure that works with the Joint chiefs if Staff at the Pentagon.

Dai, SIS is not made up fella. As previously mentioned, SIS is the official term for MI6. SS is the official term for MI5, though for reasons i just can't think of right now, it isn't used publicly by MOD..!

True SIS is strictly speaking not made up, but it is MI6.
It was the old WW1 and 1920's name for MI6 and MI5 before they were split. It was resurected as an unofficial name for a grouping of several MI6 sections that along with MI5, JIC (Joint Intellegence Commitee ) and DIS ( Joint Intellegence Staff ) that advise the Government, Police and heads of the Armed Service on wide variety of subject matter via the relevent Government Secretaries and the ISC ( Intellegence and Security Commitee ).

Right I have said way ,way to much now, and will have to hand myself in to be 'debriefed'. Now where is the tooth with the cyanide capsule

Seriously all this can be found on many government public websites. So if you fancy being James Bond I will add a clicky - This clicky will self destruct in 15 seconds

SIS sections MI6
