I design (part of a team) that designs Traffic management equipment and speed cameras are one of our products.
It just depends of the camera it self. There are all different types and they are set to different ranges. the only thing stopping people from making long range ones are the infered lasers. The lasers need to be eye safe. The longer the range the more power its needs making it unsafe for the human eye.
The chosen One.
Where did you see or hear about the 1000m one from? i would love to see that.

loads of them have been popping up recently all over the place, just wondered what is there range that they can detect you from, because the more older camera's ahd lines to warn you when you was out of range. any got idea's of how far the new ones can reach now?

yeah its a bit annoying because round here they've them in some of the most inconvenient places you could think of. they place one near the end of a carriage way limiting the speed to 30mph!!!!!! come on, on a carriage way thats literally not moving at all. and also you don't know whether your in the clear or not and your always wondering whether you've been flashed or not.

Do they not use piezo-electrics or some other such new-fangled sensor technology installed below the road surface?
Or am I thinking about the traffic signal cameras?
Has anyone been flashed by these IR cameras? I can quite clearly see their flash; it's filtered to remove the blue tones which affect vision (by causing a white-out of the vision) but they definitely don't just operate on the IR band by the look of it...

it depends on the setup but the most common i have seen have a sensor accross the road a few feet in front of the camera. and the camera uses an infrared beam infront and measures the speed over distance between the 2, infrared does not have a large distance, you may only be looking at 15m infront of the camera maximum.

Did a bit of asking around about the 1000m one. its an american one, the one that looks like a gun. Only because they have different standard on infra red lasers or lazers.
