Si - Have you tried Premier Lodge, etc? You could get a room with them for about £70 per night with full breakfast about £8 per head on top of that. If you need to be in Central London, then a Premier Lodge or similar somewhere like Twickenham, Wembley, Epping, and convenient for public transport may be the best bet.

Depends where in London you need to be how suitable Croydon is. It's well south of the river, therefore the Underground doesn't go there. However, the rail service is probably OK as it's on the way to Gatwick. Don't know if Night Buses from Trafalgar Square go out that far.
Websites for Travelodge, Premier Lodge, Holiday Inn Express, etc., generally show maps of where the building is so you can get an idea of how close to either a rail or Underground station it is.
Once you come up with a preferred option, other more local Scoobynetters might be able to give more advice about the areas (eg. don't even think of the ***Lodge in **** as as you'll get stabbed walking from the station).

Super Si,
I stayed with the family at this place last month for a show. Nice place, good rooms and less than £100 per night.

Also good restaurants downstairs and nearby and its just off Oxford Street/Regeants St for shopping - if you like that sort of thing !

I am sitting watching that program to. I stayed at the Lonsdale hotel in Bloomsbury about three years ago, which was featured. The wife and I were sitting watching it saying that it would be funny if that hotel has on.
haha, what a dump.
The worst thing was the smell, the smell coming up through the shower and wash hand basin just smelled of raw sewage.
Makes me gag thinking about it.

Thistle Tower Hotel is quite nice - take a look at:
http://www.londontown.com
They usually quote prices between 50-70% cheaper than booking direct. Just don't order room service - bottle of champers cost me £55!
If you're taking the mrs out for a meal then try booking through:
http://www.toptable.co.uk/
They have some really spesh eating places well cheap! Lightship10 is fantastic but with discount will still set you back about £90 for 2
Will look like you've spent £500 when its only really cost you just under £200 - don't forget the flowers (can't recommend anyone for these though apart from Tescos!)
