I saw an article somewhere aboutthis yesterdy. Was it MSN? With some companies owning 1 share is enough to get you discounts.
Mind you with hotels in many cases by hunting around on the net, using Teletext you can get stunning deals anyway.

Loads of people do this, mainly in a bid to get the annual report sent to them and to receive any discounts (as mentioned by Chris, it usually fails as their is normally a minimum)
Actual admin costs are pretty large to the company per shareholder (invites to AGM, dividend cheques, cost of a printed interim/annual report circa £10) so do not expect to be liked by any other shareholders etc (not that that will probably bother you)
Cheers

Quite right mate
What I really meant was .... that the company employees or the registrars would scowl at you (I just remember in my old job, looking at the list of shareholders and saying "look at that rich sod" .....or "there's another mean get just after his annual report")
Not important in the slightest and if you think you can get a bargain out of it Rik, then go for it
