My fiancee wanted to do it, but after some reservations I went along.
We had an hours lesson and it feels like I've forgotten everything! It was fun, but also very frustrating.
Any tips, advice on improving, other than practise??

Bajie,
You are so right!!!
I really ache at the moment!!! I guess it's showing me how unfit I am! I've strapped up my ankle and my knee at the moment and my lower back is playing up!! I just need my neck to go and it will highlight every weak point that has come about through previous sports!
A massage now would be good!!!

I was invited salsa dancing last week, I also have reservations but since a cute girl asked me I think I'm gonna go. Apart from getting drunk beforehand any other tips? I can just imagine how humiliating it will be

Bajie, I think the last thing I want from you is a massage!!
Steve, I guess it's down to the instructor. As there were a few new to salsa, they split us off and taught us two basic steps and two turns. Apparently that is enough to start dancing, although after an hour I use the term 'dancing' loosly!!!
At one point I was ready to walk out and not go back. But once the instructor insist that I dance with someone, the moves just came back.
Apparently it's harder for the bloke at first, as they have to learn quite a few bits and pieces, but apparently when they are up to speed, it's down to the women to play catch up!
I know I'll be back next week, so we'll see from there!

I have no idea who the instructor is or even where it is, somewhere in the west end. They're offering a free tester night so it wont cost me anything but my pride

Andy, I'll have to offer my services elsewhere
Steve, club salsa [I think that's the name, can't remember], more or less opposite Break for the Border had a notice about freeby lessons IIRC, could be there. Nice dancing partners to be had there by all accounts ...

I think I can boost you along here. I did quite a few salsa lessons with my missus before I moved elsewhere, and all the other blokes there where 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times better than me, so I was in the beginner group with all the beginner honeys! as they moved around partners and I was 1 of 2 beginner guys there (about 15 women) I got alot better very quickly and got to dance with them all. he he he. Most of them were students from the Uni as well.
Needles to say the missus got annoyed because I got more practise per pound and all these women... she got blisters
Its all a good laugh at the end of the day. I would have at least 2 pints before going though.

FWIW, when starting off, I'd recommend two simple things: think about your balance, and don't try too hard. I found that I was putting a lot of work into trying to force my hips to move; the answer is to relax and let it happen naturally.
In two years, every person I've spoken to doesn't think they can dance. Not one person who tried it has failed.
