My egg card is just about to end its 6month interest free period and I looked online for a replacement, you know, to transfer the balance to for another 6 months and found that Halifax are doing 9months interest free on balance and purchases.

Just thought I'd share that in case nobody knew, very handy, means I can pay my insurance and some other stuff off on my terms rather than on Directlines

Trick is not to actually use the credit to buy new toys!

yeah, my marbles one just ran out (which I got when Egg one ran out!), so
now got a Virgin one for next 6 months....

Never had a Halifax one, so will use them next time :-)

Credit limits these companies give me now are ridiculous though - no wonder some people get so badly in debt - the credit limits I am being given now without asking are nearly £20k......

Luckily I can resist temptation, but no doubt some can't, which is why they do it.

WHY OH WHY OH WHY do they get so stuffy about mortgage lending, yet credit card lending seems so lax - I mean, I could go out and get a few more credit cards tmmrw, and my credit limit on all cards combined would be about £100k!!
That is surely irresponsible lending?????

Just waiting for my Halifax Card now after my Egg, Tesco, Marbles, Virgin Cards interst free periods have come to an end. As you say its frightening how easy it is to get them.

Check out Money Supermarket for some comparisons.

The best at the moment is Barclaycard who are offering 0% on the lifetime of the balance transfer. The only downside is you need to spend at least £25 per month on the card, but if you use a credit card for normal everyday stuff (shopping, petrol, etc.) and just clear this every month, then you can get the transfer interest free.

Well, mortgage lending is secured against property, and in the majority of cases, the lender is guaranteed to get nearly ALL their cash back if there is defaulting.
So why do they get so uppity over lending and question you to the third degree when applying!

With unsecured lending, they hardly ask anything, and have NO guarantees of getting cash back if you default....

The high level fo consumer debt in this country surely can partly be blamed on irresponsible unsecured lending!

I bet that your monthly "just clear this" payments will go towards paying off your 0% balance transfer, leaving your nice high-interest spending to rack up the charges

UHF - which Halifax card? Only ones I can see on their site offer 5 months 0% not 9 months.
