...and you saw them do it, how far away would the person with the gun have to be for you to have enough time to get out of the way of the bullet, assuming you moved instantly?
I know there's loads and loads of variables in there, but can anyone suggest a rough estimate?

well, how would you know he'd pulled the trigger? i.e. the bullet will travel faster than sound so you'll probably be hit before you hear the bang!
like watching someone hit a golf ball towards you from a couple of hundred feet away...

Yep, i know there's lots of What Ifs Steve, but lets suppose your eyesight was good enough to see the trigger finger move, or something like that.
Would you actually be able to see the bullet coming towards you, or do they move too fast?
And let's assume an "average" power rifle, although i'd be interested to know what difference it would make if the firer had an ultra-powerful gun!

hehehe well, yeah, forgot about muzzle flash (but that could be supressed ) so, as puff said, 800ft/s (something the ickle size of a bullet) there is no way you'd see it coming!
i think you've been watching the matrix too much
so, why do you ask? thinking of doing some jackass type experiments? good luck

Let's say you can see the flash with binoculars, your reaction time is 0.3s (average for this kind of thing) and can move out of the way in another 0.3s. In 0.6s, a bullet could have travelled about 160m. So you would need to stand a little bit further away than that to be safe. Or play a different game....

Thanks for replies - interesting!
Nope, nothing Matrix-related, never seen them. Didn't realise it was relevant to either of those films to be honest!
Now i need a 160 metre tape measure!

Speed of sound is 330m/s so bullet must be faster than 800ft/s as that's 272.5ft/s slower than sound.I'd imagine more like 500m/s(1625f/s approx). So assuming you move as soon as they fire, you'd need to be around 250-300metres away.
You could always catch it in your teeth for the pose.

What if they are a crap shot though, and by moving when you see them fire, you move out of a safe position and into the path of the bullet?
If they were using an SA-80, the 0.6 second would give you a safe distance of approx 900 x 0.6 = 540m. Problem that; the effective range of a single SA-80 is quoted at 300m (or 500m as a section weapon), so if the shooter is in range, you've not got chance to get out of the way!
I suppose though you could hope they are using a SA-80 there's a pretty good chance it would either misfire or have a stoppage!
John.

Work out the distance as accuratelty as you can, double it and try this for real - I DARE you, go on. What ever the out come would make a good newspaper story and worth a few quid probably.

Wouldnt suggest trying to dodge a bullit if some one shoots at you here in uk.... The shooter could sue you for something silly like "stopping him from his right to kill you" or some other tosh...trouble is they could win!!

I was shot in the side many years ago and I was hit before anyone heard the shot. I was hit bt a 7.62 round from an AK at about 400 yards. At 800 fps and with 330 mps for sound I guess you would have to be just under a mile away for hear it and dive for the dirt.
As for body armour, depends on what your anticipating the threat to be. 9mm round with a decent set of Kevlars would be as close as 10-15 feet, but you would suffer serious soft tissue damage behind the strike. An AK or M16 your talking serious distance like 150-200 feet. Most serive issue body armour is designed for shrapnel not for taking rounds.
TelBoy for what purpose is this mate ?.
Is this a dispute on Delta Force Land Warrior ?
Or are you going into the Yardie business ?.
