Tips on NEGOTIATING SALARY.
#1
Ok been doing a weeks trail at a company and the week come to an end tomorrow. If they do offer me the job is it possible to nagotiate the salary or will it be rude?
I dont what to push it because its my first real job since Uni.
My sister thinks I sound just take what they give me without saying a word.
The thing is i dont want them to take avantage og me cuz iv got no experience but on the other hand if they offer me cr@p money was it worth studying all those years.

if they offer the job then ask for a salary review after 6 months. You'll know what the works like and what the going rate is by then and have more arguments

Asked a mate what the going rate for a CAD operator/ Design Engineer and he said 22k plus. They asked me what i was looking for at the Interview. I asked for 16k-20k. have I shot myself in the foot? But I dont think i would have got it if I asked for more.

Is being a CAD operator/design engineer what you want to do (IIRC it is)? Take the job (go for the high end of the 16-20k) and ask for a salary review after 6 months. Hopefully you'll be invaluable to them by then.
Most companies have a probationary period anyway -- you can angle for a pay rise after that.

Well done Ray!!
What do you design? You were keen on Product design - is it engineering based? I would say £20k in Birmingham is fair for a start .............. in about 5 years you should be pulling in £35k without too much difficulty!!
Are you interested in PCB design? Is it Autocad you are using?
Either way, a job is a job and not to be sniffed at when you are starting out ............. I really wish you all the best!

PCB as in printed circuit boards.
PS: I don't think you will be able to run a Scoob on that salary. Probably best to wait a few years rather than cripple yourself financially -- after all, it's only a car (and a cheap Japanese one at that).

been doing alot of thinking but I dont think I can afford one on that pay even i still live at home (parents have been in Hong Kong for last 2 years, flying back for a month at a time, so i do live along) So i might just use the money to buy any old car and pay off student load.

It should at least give you a rough idea of the market averages.

At the moment they can live without you.. If you push too hard that's exactly what they'll do..
Most jobs have a probationery period with a review at that point.. Take the job see how the probationery goes.. all being well they'll be full of praise and you'll have a better idea of the going rate and what everyone else is getting.. That's the time to ask for more... unless they offer you something ridiculous at the start..

i find it kind of worrying that you dont know what a pcb is baring in mind you want to go into cad design.
I would say definately start on a lower salary until you can prove yourself and learn more about the industry. Then start chasing the cash once you have established yourself

Make sure you know what you're talking about to start with!
16-20k is too wide a range. They'll never offer you 20 if they think they'll get away with 16.

Well I got offered the job today they want me back on monday to sign the contract. I got told I work better than the CAD man they have at the moment. They need me cuz they dont have any of their products on CAD.
I still dont know how much they are gonna pay me.
The reason I dont know what PCB is that I'm not a electronics person. I design hard object like casings. Dont have a clue how electronics works. Its not right if you cant see it
