Left wing Fabian society today reported on its findings of a year long enquiry into the monarchy.
It recomends the Queen should no longer be the Supreme governer of the Cof E.also that a centuries old ban on a catholic monarch be lifted.
Also suggests scrapping the tradition that sons not daughters have precedence in succeeding the throne. It wants the royals to pay inheritance tax as well.
Personally I think that as the royals bring in millions into this country and are also a very large part of our heritage then they should stay. After seeing the Jubilee celebrations last year I think alot of others would support this.

sovreignty (?) goes a long way to making Britain Great. Like you say, the jubilee celebrations were fandabydozy. Leave em alone is what I say, they generate far more revenue than they spend and who are they really hurting.

not the old 'tourism' argument...
The French got rid of their royals ages ago - doesn't stop the tourists....its the buildings they come to see not the royals...
scrap the lot of them - bring on the republic...

Its all to do with the magic word "modernisation". It is an excuse to rearrange all the traditions which have served this country so well for centuries and continue to do so. It is all for the convenience of and part of the future plans of our leaders to increase their power. If they achieve their ambitions you will really have something to complain about.

Leslie, oddly enough one of the traditions you talk about is Parliament - which arose out of an attempt to scrap the monarchy
I think the dodgy bits of the monarchy are gradually disappearing, leaving us just with the tourism. Eddie has to earn his own wage, dukes and duchesses are gradually being kicked out of their cheap accommodation, they have stuff-all law-making powers, Brenda now pays taxes (I think), and the Grauniad just won its campaign against some anachronistic law that makes it an offence to call for the abolition of the monarchy - the law exists, but no-one will enforce it.
I mean, what's left of it that is really so offensive, apart from Prince Phillip?

Good point Brendan, but I have nothing against our parliamentary traditions either, only particular organisations!
South Star, you love the idea of World Government, try voting in who you want if that ever happens.

I read that the report recommends the Royal family pay death duties. What a load of crap. Buck House auctioned off to pay them? Death duties stink anyway, but to lose palaces and castles to pay for whatever the government of the day wants to fund is absurd.
I like the fact that we have a monarchy and that we have had one for almost two thousand years.
I'm sure Luke will be along soon
