Hi,

Got given a Garden Patio Heater as a wedding gift - instructions make NO mention of whether to use Propane or Butane....

Someone gave me a spare Butane gas cylinder, but not sure whether this will be ok? Does it make much difference????

butane - usually the one to use.
more readily available and cheaper.

propane usually better for cold weather - as it has lower freezing point.I'm sure theres other reasons - but thats all I know.

It depends what regulator it's fitted with, it should say on it whether it's for propane or butane, if it doesn't then depending on the way it fixes will tell you which type it is; a propane regulator screws on with a nut (anticlockwise thread) and a butane regulator clips/pushes on. Our patio heater takes 13kg propane cylinders.

However some heaters that I've seen are fitted with snap-on regulators for the smaller green gas cylinders which tend to be be propane cylinders painted green

our's is propane but I think just because of the fitting. If you ask Hank Hill he'll say propane as its cleaner burning..

You will get given an adapter from the garage if you tell them it's for a patio heater.

Congratultions by the way

No need for one today though, but they are bloody usefull things.
I just got my wireless network going today so I'm surfing from the garden

Yeah - I need some shades for the screen - I'm sure the novelty will wear off - but it's only been installed for 20 minutes and I'm like a pig in ****

Propane burns cleaner and at a constant pressure right to the end of the bottle.

Butane pressure drops off towards the end.

Propane is also usually more expensive. I use propane on my gas BBQ no problems.

Butane only works down to about 0 degC.
Propane works below 0 degC.

So unless your gonna be sitting out on the patio in the middle of winter stick to butane

Ours is propane - checked last night

friends of ours have got one of those chem-whatever Regacy put () they aren't cheap and they found out it isn't frost proof either so it is a bit knackered after the winter. It's also quite big so not really good for dragging in and out

imlach, FYI, Guidelines for the Safe Use of LPG Patio Heaters:

http://www.calorgas.co.uk/hmpg/hmpgdisplaylev3.asp?idofuser=&catid=4&catid2=54&wh ere=lev3&catid3=135

Long story short: the main difference is that they have different operational gas pressures, normally 28 mbar butane or 37 mbar propane. And an appropriate regulator must be fitted using hose to BS3212/2 and suitable clips.

Best to contact your local Calor Centre for any further techy advice etc:

Search here:

http://www.calorgas.co.uk/dealer/search.asp?idofuser=&catid=8&from=D&where=T

As for gas prices:

13 Kg Propane - gas refill (orange cylinder)
 Ideal for the winter caravan trip - due to it's lower freezing point can be used in colder outdoor weather.
Price : £14.25 inc VAT

Patio Gas - 13kg Propane - gas refill (green cylinder with orange top)
All Patio Heaters come ready to run on new Patio Gas. Calor Patio Gas is the only all weather performance patio heater cylinder that accepts the easy fit clip on regulator that requires no tools for assembly. Subject to a cylinder refill agreement charge if no empty patio gas cylinder is available for exchange.
Price : £14.99 inc VAT

15 Kg Butane - gas refill (blue cylinder)
 Ideal for the larger portable heater
Price : £17.25 inc VAT

Gas properties:

Propane can be used at lower temps due to it’s lower boiling point of –42 oC whereas Butane is –2 oC. These are boiling point coz below these temp it’s in a liquid state and not a gas!

More boring techy gas info:

Butane spec info:

http://www.calorgas.co.uk/hmpg/hmpgdisplaylev3.asp?where=lev3&catid=4&catid2=54&c atid3=136

Propane spec info:

http://www.calorgas.co.uk/hmpg/hmpgdisplaylev3.asp?where=lev3&catid=4&catid2=54&c atid3=137

Hope that helps

Jeff (aka Calor Senior Buyer @ HQ)

BTW Scoobychick, what dealer do you work at?
