Depends whether you want a device with great capacity or a device of minimal size. My approach was to consider that, yes, there are hard-drive type players (iPod, etc) - but they carry more music than I'd actually need for a day's travelling.
My solution was to get a small, solid-state player. I have the "Ultrasm 128Mb" by M-Any. I'd never heard of them - but it stores a couple of albums at reasonable quality (i.e. you don't need 256kbps on a train/bus/tube!).
It's tiny, as well! 9mm thick, 54mm wide and 78mm long.

Latest iPod is great for styling and form factor for a hard disk-based player. Still too large for shirt pocket and too precious for the gym IMHO.
Later this year, you'll start to see players utilising 1.5" HD (1.5GB at launch) in flash memory form factors.

Lee -- had a look on your website, but the range of non-HD mpio MP3 players is confusing. They're all about the same price, but all different. I want one to listen to on the train/tube (I guess FM radio would be useful too), and I guess that upgradeable memory would be good. Which to go for though:
DMG+
FD100
FL100
DMK128

Here's the basic breakdown:
DMK128: MP3 only. Small, lipstick-sized thing.
FL100: MP3/WMA/FM tuner. Small, shiny. Expandable with SD/MMC.
FD100: MP3/WMA/FM tuner. Expandable with SMC. Remote control. Colour choice.
DMG+: MP3/WMA. No tuner. Expandable with SMC. Clip on camera option.
DMK and FL100 are the best selling mpio players. A new FL100 with 512MB is available in 7-10 days.
Prices are dropping with the next shipment (7-10 days) such that:
DMK128: £99.99 (sorry Chris!)
FL100: £129.99/£169.99/£239.99
FD100: £156.99/£189.99
DMG+: £169.99
IMHO the FL100 128MB at £129.99 is a bargain! These will all be available in ScoobyShop at 10% discount for Plus members. Hope this clears up the range for you. Ping me if you'd like a brochure or check out the Korean English at www.mpio.com

£99.99 for the DMX? Noooo
Mind, I just looked I purchased my DMX back in May 2002.
Carl,
I often use my DMX on the train / tube and lots at the gym. People carting CD walkmans or HD based players around the gym generates a smile from me.
To highlight the size of the DMX:
Chris.

I've got a Sony Walkman that plays MP3's. Cost £99.99 over a year ago. 15 albums on one CD + also plays normal CD's. Gotta be the best value if you're not going the jukebox route.

As I don't wear a jacket in this weather, and my pockets are already full (wallet, keys, company pass, rail tickets and photocard) I'm veerrrry tempted to go for the lipstick-sized one...

I got a Jukebox recorder 20, fing brilliant, a little heavy buy hey!
Ipods are crap! anything made by apple is crap! stay away!
Cool thin about the jukebox is, if you don't mind voiding the waranty, you an open it up, (They use the small 2.some inch hard drives, you can buy yourself one fairly cheap and just replace the original hard drive!
My mate did it, no probs what so ever! 120Gb MP3 player!
If an ipod can hold about 7000 songs, my mates can hold almost 30,000 songs
And the cost of this extra 100Gb upgrade? £98 + VAT
can't argue with that!

I bought a Panasonic SD75 a year abd a bit ago and never looked back.
It's small (so small you get a watchstrap attachment for it to wear on your wrist), takes SD cards (Handy - so does my digital camera), comes with a 64MB card (I use a 128MB one now) AND a USB reader, so there's about £40 worth of extras before we've even got to the price), and has really good battery life (one AAA battery - about 5-6 hours on full volume), the only drawback is the software to put it on the sd card.... Realplayer .
Still for £129 you can't complain (dixons end-of-line clearance, £300 at the panasonic shop). Shame they don't make them anymore, but they do make a similar model now.

I have a Sony Net-MD Minidisc player MZ-N707 You can burn MP3 to the disc and i can normally get just over 4 albums on it. Only downside is that its been back for repair twice due to the headphone connection inside needing resoldering, one more time and i get a new one. !!
