Okay if this is the best the education system has to offer for new graduates, then we're all doomed. Oh wait, I'm in my final year too..

A dissertation is a small project carried out to test the candidates ability to do research. A successfull dissertation means you can add (HONS) behind the other letters....

Lol @ Carter Guess Dan B didn't either

PS, Durleydude, serious question, but if your degree's in computing, surely you know the importance of correct syntax? Either way, if the people who eventually read your CV care about the way you present yourself on paper, you might be in trouble!

Not trying to get on your case, just speaking from the point of view of someone who employs people (or doesn't, if it doesn't look like they're up to the job!).

Cool

Doing a dissertation isn't what gives you the Hons part of a degree. It's all down to the grade. I've got a BSc(Hons) but didn't do a dissertation.

Oh, and re: spelling, it doesn't really matter what subject your degree course is in, if you can't write properly then you're clearly thick as sh....

<cue link the 'spelling' thread from the other week>

Take care about plagiarising others' work from the net for your dissertation - most universities now run essays, dissertations and theses through a software check to see if the work has been copied. Get caught - no degree! With all the new technologies around today, you shouldn't be short of ideas, but just make sure they're your own!

Wink

If you steal another persons work, they call it plagiarism. If you steal lots of other peoples work then they call it research!

Good for you. I had to do a project.... I suppose it depends on the subject then really. Not much point doing research into English.

There used to be some very helpful sites in my days, where you could pose a question and get a full response.

A bit of copy and paste, alter a few words thus avoiding plaguerism and voila top marks.

Worked very well for me......

Ahhh, final year disertations. Those were the days!

I'd spent all year doing eff-all and never worked so hard the 5 days before the dead-line

Ok it meant I got a 2:2 instead of a 2:1 BEng (borderline..doh). But hey, spend every evening studying / working etc....or have some fun, watch TV, scratch ****, drink beer etc

I know what'd I'd choose and I'd do again

Thought this may be of help to you.....

Dissertation Publishing Terms

"IT HAS LONG BEEN KNOWN . . . ."
I haven't bothered to look up the original reference

"OF GREAT THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL IMPORTANCE"
interesting to me

"WHILST IT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE TO PROVIDE DEFINITE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS"
Although the experiments didn't work out, I figured I could get a paper out of it

"EXTREMELY HIGH PURITY"
composition unknown, except for the exaggerated claims of the supplier

"THREE OF THE SAMPLES WERE CHOSEN FOR DETAILED STUDY"
results on the others didn't make sense and were ignored

"ACCIDENTALLY CONTAMINATED DURING THE EXPERIMENT"
dropped on the floor

"HANDLED WITH EXTREME CARE DURING THE EXPERIMENTS"
not dropped on the floor

"TYPICAL RESULTS ARE SHOWN . . "
the best results are shown

"PRESUMABLY AT LONGER TIMES . . . "
I didn't take the time to find out

"THESE RESULTS WILL BE REPORTED AT A LATER DATE"
I might get around to this sometime

"THE MOST RELIABLE VALUES ARE THOSE OF JONES"
Jones was a student of mine

"IT IS BELIEVED THAT . . . "
I think

"IT IS GENERALLY BELIEVED THAT . . ."
a couple of others think it too

"IT MIGHT BE ARGUED THAT . . ."
I have a good answer to this objection and here it is

"MUCH ADDITIONAL WORK WILL BE REQUIRED BEFORE A COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING . . ."
I don't understand it

"CORRECT WITHIN AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE"
wrong

"HOPEFULLY THIS PAPER WILL STIMULATE FURTHER WORK IN THIS FIELD"
this work is not very good, but neither are the other papers on this miserable subject

"MY THANKS ARE DUE TO JOE GLOTZ FOR ASSISTANCE WITH THE EXPERIMENTS AND TO JOHN DOE FOR VALUABLE DISCUSSIONS"
Glotz did the work and Doe explained to me what it meant
