got pulled by the cops for speeding in a 40mph i was doing about 70mph but its a single road and never really busy.i went past the local shops speeding and thats where they saw us and come out after us but cause i was going that fast they couldnt really catch us.when they pulled us over he was writing on his pad and when he finished i asked is this 3 points then he said no cause they didnt track us for 3/10 of a mile they couldnt do anything which was rather lucky so i just had to show my docs but i was so relieved it wasnt points as the insurance is getting renewed shortly.just to elaberate dont think i was driving out of control cause everyone speeds on it its like an unwritten law you have to speed on it but remember if your stopped they have to track you for 3/10 of a mile.

This 3/10 of a mile thing is b*ll*cks, they're feeding you a bit of a line there. They can do you quicker than that if you come up against the wrong bit of technology.

If it was a regular beat panda car, without any of the posh kit, chances are it didn't have a calibrated speedo, VASCAR or any other form of legally acceptable speed measuring device in it.

If this was the case they'd have a job doing you for speeding no matter how long they were following you (although, given that you were going that fast, they may well have had a go at d c & a, or even dangerous driving)!

Sounds like their intention, more than anything else, would probably have been to give you a bit of a scare and make you think about your driving, which it sounds like they did.

Either way though, don't think that this 3/10 of a mile thing gives you any security against being done. Even if it was accurate, don't forget that 3/10 of a mile at 90mph would only take 12 seconds, and if you were done for 90 in a 40, you'd almost certainly get a ban for your trouble

So it's an unwritten law and you have to speed on it, because everyone else does, do you?

Who's in control of your driving standards, you or everyone else? Be your own man, as the adverts say...

The 3/10 of a mile requirement has been in existence for many years. It stems from the days before Vascar, radar, laser and the like. The cop car or bike had to follow you for a minimum of 3/10 mile to be able legally to say that you had been speeding during the time you were followed. He had to have been maintaining a reasonable distance behind you too. The Law required the 3/10 mile so that he could get a steady reading on his speedo.

That is one reason why us older drivers look in the mirror so much

If there were two coppers then they could have done you just from they're own observations. I reckon they probably didn't want the paperwork, hassle, chance that a smart lawyer could screw them over in court. Giving you a producer is their little way of letting you know they know.

Does that mean if you keep accelerating so that they can#'t get a steady speed and then slow right down etc, i.e. no constant speed, they can only give you a producer???

Aren't u glad no kids were coming out "the local shops" 90 in a 40 what a numpty, and u wonder why there are so many speed camera's going up.. its because people like u think its ok to do 90 in a 40.
Im the 1st to admit i speed, my ticket said 46 in a 40, but 90 in a 40 on a single road, sheer stupidity.

since when has 70 in a 40 going past the local shops been an unwritten law??

me thinks you need to re-evaluate what you call acceptable speeding

everyone speeds - 50 in a 40 fair enough

but 70 in a built up area?

dont want to preach but youll end up putting someone 6ft under if your not careful

I thought the unwritten ruling was that speeding in town is a no-no, but that on the open road you *pays yer money and takes yer chance*.
Where I come from anyway

Incorrect as it only has to register at any given moment(if they've got the equipment) OR an average speed over a distance. So even if you go 70-90-60-100-70-90-50-110-70-90 you're average will be 80.

A panda car can do you if they time you with a stopwatch using two 'markers' (e.g lamposts etc.) and can use that as evidence.

i dont think you understand the road its not built up like a town its a straight single road with shops of to the side so the people are well away from the cars if you live in this area you will appreciate its not like town roads where its heavily congested with people or cars

That is irrelevant....it is a 40 limit. what gives you the right to assess the road and conditions and then choose a speed that you decide is acceptable.

People like you that drive like complete tw@ts deserve to be caught and banned. I only hope that this happens to you before you have the chance to deprive a family of a loved one.

Well then you would be wrong my friend.

I don't speed as my current car has dificulty maintaining 30 mph...

The speed limit is there for a reason. Stick to it and you will be fine. If not then don't post on a public BBS about your pathetic speeds and lucky escapes and you won't get flamed.

Would you ba able to live with yourself if you knocked over someones child and killed them when you were speeding? I think not. If you knocked any of my children over whilst behaving like this then the courts wouldn't need to deal with you as I would.

You clearly don't see anyones point of view. We are saying that it is a 40 zone so you have NO right to go any faster than that even if the road is deserted.

If you want to carry on testing the 3/10 theory then I sincerly hope tha you get caught and they throw the book at you.

Grow up a bit or be prepared to take responsability for your actions.

Would anyone be able to live with themselves if they killed someone and they weren't speeding! Must show very bad attention and concentration skills. I'd rather the roads be full of people doing 10mph over the limit and concentrating rather then obeying the limit and not concentrating. They're far more dangerous!

Regardless, 30/40/50 limits are often set for a reason (not all of them granted) so if you think that the limit is too low then it's because of one of two things...
1 - the limit is disproportionately low (so campaign against it) OR (and more likely)..
2 - you've missed the reason why it's a 40 (in the case above). There are hazards that you DIDN'T SEE that means the limit is a 40. There are strict rules governing what limit a road can be set up.

CC....breaking the speed limit is something that we all do at some point I agree but not nearly doubling it.
