Unbelievable.
1997: Won general election and announced road building moratorium
1998: Said building more roads to ease congestion on the M25 was "not an option"
2000: Maintained stance: "Simply building more and more roads is not the answer."
2002: Initiated road-building programme as rail network deteriorated
2003: Major road expansion and study into national charging planned
This government really is the most slimey, two-faced, untrustworthy bunch of ***** I've ever come across. It really is time to get out of this s**thole country.

They need to get freight off the roads and back onto the railways. It seems that HGV traffic is expanding faster than other traffic (may not be the case but it certainly feels like there was an explosion of HGV traffic in the last 18 months or so)

yeah...cause car owners DONT have to pay enough out already!
policitians are a bunch of morons. why dont they just stop giving themselves ridiculous payrises and use that money to do up the roads.

On the subject of HGV traffic are people aware that much of the time that big HGV next to you is travelling completely or at least partly empty.
The haulage companies moan about the tax on fuel, but a lot of them are not prepared to do anything to optimise their capacity - should tax them further I reckon ;-)

tiggers.

I agree with Uncle buck . Time to get out bigtime.
As for Tiggers reply lol.
£ 3000 a year road tax for HGV, same insurance. And 9 mpg ,and you want us to be charged more. If tax needs to go up on anything Its 4 x 4 owners that need it uping. Discovery,Rangerovers, Shoguns etc etc should be £ 500 a year as they think they own the road , they intimadate other road users and 99% will never climb anything more then a curb

Nimbus - you forgot the best bit! They can reduce speed limits on the A/B roads to 40mph, and then put speed cameras every mile to get revenue up on them too. The government is also hoping that so many drivers get banned on totting-up that this will also reduce congestion.

Would people mind paying for a high speed lane on the motorway that had maybe an 80mph limit
and no road works
and seperate from the rest of the lanes?
#12
There would have to be a physical barrier to keep the none paying peasants out of the way. Cars using the lane could have radar controlled cruise control to keep them a safe distance apart and all at 80mph. The road would be self repairing, thus never need road works ;-)

Shropshire Guy,
I was only kidding about taxing them further hence the wink, but I am serious about optimisation. It was a huge issue with the packaging company where I worked up until a little while ago, but I don't think a lot of prgress was made.

tiggers.
P.S. I'm totally with you on the 4x4 off road fashion accessory thing by the way - you got my vote.

if all money from Taxation on the motorist went in to road building and maintance we would have the best most comprehensive road network in Europe with no jams until that day why pay more than we already do?
And yes we can build more roads and not have grid lock the current problem is that road building stopped and vehicle usage continued to grow as any sensiable person would expect from a society which relies on Mobility of Labour as a key part of its economic success and with growth in the economy so comes increase in wealth to the individual so car ownership grows and also the population is growing!
All in all the road network only covers a fraction of the land surface of this country and they can build the roads we need and not damage the country. if need be put tunnels under the sensitive bits of go round them. what they also need to do and is being done is to use vehicles with less emissions and cost in time wasted as an asset wasted then we would prove what we know that the car is more economical and efficient than public transport can ever be!

Hello ....
Story here: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/030709/80/e3xl6.html
Extracts:
"Darling is also expected to outline proposals for introducing road charging throughout England to avoid gridlock on the country's busiest roads."
"Transport advisers said earlier this week that a 50 pence a mile charge should be imposed on the busiest roads by 2015."
Steve.
