As the operation progressed, it became clear the brains had fused together after 29 years sharing the same skull cavity, and the separation would not be as straightforward as anticipated.

From the scans they had done it appeared that they hadn't fused, it was only until they exposed the brains that this was reveled. This is not a straight forward everyday operation (obviously) and the twins were made aware of that, they gave them a 50/50 chance of surviving the operation which they knew before agreeing to have the opperation.

An interesting decision to have this operation. I would say that a 50/50 chance was being optimistic.
It must be terrible to be joined to someone 24 hours a day, but I wonder if it was worth dying over?

A real shame, my heart goes out to the other twin. If she survives she'll be wondering of it was the right thing to do for the rest of her life.

Would've been a great milestone in medical procedures if this had been succesfull for both, or even one of them.
Obvioulsy wasn't meant to be. I'm sure they knew the risks before going ahead with it.
Shame it never worked though.

Oh no- I didn't realise that they had both died- I though you just meant the second one.
