How do guide dogs know where they are going?

Watching a guide dog the other day and was very impressed with its skills at road crossing etc...but then I wondered how on earth the dog knows wheres its going..I concluded that the owner must be at least partially sighted....or maybe not...shed any light on this amazing system....

The blind person has a ballpark idea where they are going. A guy who lives near us brings his dog to my daughters school. From home he walks 120 paces, turns left, walks until the dog stops, crosses the road, walks until the dog stops, turns right, crosses the road etc etc.
Amazing thing is he can tell you the distance in paces for just about everywhere in Belfast. He doesn't actually count them. He just knows. Dog is also very clever.

I work for Transco ,the gas company. Few months ago there was an unfortunate(but funny) incident at an excavation . The guys on site found a blind guy lying in a hole with a broken arm obviously having fallen down it.
On moving him they were shocked to discover that he had fallen on top of his labrador guide dog who had obviously fallen in to the hole first.
Chip.

Last time I was in the vets waiting room a guide dog slashed against the ornimental fireplace It's owner must have heard the splashes, but managed not to react. Nearly pissed myself
(suppose the owner just turned a blind eye)
So how do guidedogs know where to curl one?
